Web page charts evolution of anti-racism campaign
To bring Kick It Out’s inaugural ‘Season of Action’ to a close, the organisation has developed a microsite highlighting key landmarks from throughout its 20 year history.
The microsite uses a wide variety of online articles, stats, iconic images and video content to display the impact of Kick It Out since the organisation’s inception under its original title, ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’, in 1993.
Charting the evolution of the ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ campaign from an eight-point plan of action to a fully-comprehensive organisation tackling all forms of discrimination, the microsite is a must-use resource for anyone interested in the past, present and future of Kick It Out, as well as being a valuable teaching aid for schools and grassroots clubs alike.
The likes of Lord Herman Ouseley, chair and founder of Kick It Out, Keith Alexander, Zesh Rehman and Rachel Yankey are all quoted in the chronological timeline, which starts with a brief history of black footballers before providing the reader with an insight into the early resistance faced by the campaign, its achievements and the ongoing challenges looking to be addressed.
The microsite is full of unique content including a fascinating article on the development of the ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ logo, based on a discussion between Louis Mackay, the logo designer, and Louise Ansari, campaigns manager at the Commission for Racial Equality, and a copy of an archived letter showing early intent from ‘London Football Clubs Against Racism’ in 1984.
There is extensive information on Kick It Out’s ‘Week of Action’ initiative, which began in 2001, and most recently grew into a ‘Season of Action’, the organisation’s work to enhance the equality practices and policies within professional clubs, and the engagement with grassroots and community groups which has been so vital in spreading awareness.
High-profile incidents of discrimination which have occurred, both domestically and abroad, during the 20 years are focused upon, as well as key break-throughs on the pitch and in the dugout, and the production of campaigning videos to tackle homophobia and antisemitism.
The final entries in the timeline show a positive future for the organisation, with the launch of the Kick It Out app and the ‘Next 20’ initiative, which champions 20 young football stars across the Premier League, Football League and the Women’s Super League as they promote messages of equality and inclusion.
