Redditch Friendly Confirmed

22 July 2014

The Robins will take on Redditch United in August ahead of the new season.

A Cheltenham Town XI will take on Redditch United on Tuesday 5 August (7.45pm kick-off) away at 'The Valley'.

The match is not linked with the signing of former Redditch winger Omar Sterling-James who put pen to paper on a six-month contract yesterday but Mark Yates has now confirmed that he will send an XI down to face the Southern Football League ahead of the 2014-15 season kicking off.

Our last visit to Redditch's Valley Stadium was in 1984 in the Southern League Cup. We won that fixture 3-2 with our goalscorers coming in the form of current Evesham manager Paul Collicutt and Cirencester manager Brian Hughes (2). That fixture also included current Robins director John Murphy.

If we look back further then that last competitive league match between the two sides was a 3-0 Cheltenham Town win in 1983 with Paul Tester scoring hat-trick. The most recent clash between the two sides however was in the Midlands Floodlit Cup in March 1989 in which Cheltenham secured a 2-1 win with Kevin Willett and Mark Buckland scoring the goals.

Omari Sterling-James, who left Redditch to join the Robins, has issued a statement to the fans of the Southern League club. You can read that statement here.
