Yates: Need To Work Together

13 February 2014

Mark Yates agrees that the pressure is on to find victory but has told of his belief in the players.

Robins chief Mark Yates speaking to the media ahead of this weekend's Sky Bet League 2 clash at home to Wycombe Wanderers (3pm):

"We need to step up to the plate again. We need characters, men and we have got that but we can't keep talking about it because we have got to do it. It'll be a good game for us on Saturday. It'll be a tight one because both teams are not in massive runs of form but there's enough in our dressing room and enough about us to galvanise ourselves. We need to stand up and be counted now as a group. One or two did on Tuesday night but that is not enough. Everyone needs to give more which they are capable of doing. We need to be positive and make sure we put in a good performance.

"We're not winning games because we are making mistakes at one end and not being ruthless enough at the other. You can analyse things in so many different ways with so many different eyes but the bottom line is that we need to win some football matches and we need to win them quickly. If that adds pressure upon ourselves then so be it. We are in the game to win. I trust the players and, whatever we play, we have to go out there and put in a performance on Saturday that excites people and shows that we care and that we can go that extra yard. We're not having much luck but sometimes you need to earn that luck and go that extra yard or two which is what we're going to have to do.

"Of course I would take an ugly 1-0 win but you don't set your teams up to do that from the start. The aim is to win and to try and give people something to shout about. The commitment and the effort was there the other day but I still think there could be more given.

"We haven't got too many numbers but I am happy enough with the group. Everyone needs to put in a 90 minute performance and a real shift. We will work hard and we want to try and play as well so we need to find that balance. I can think of nearly every game over the last couple of months we have had where we should have been taking the lead and scoring goals but then we've gone 1-0 up and not finished chances to win. One slip at the back in those games has cost us points. We have to put in a complete 90 minute plus injury time performance and not just a 45 or 60. Whatever it takes to get us  that win.

"I went to Watch Wycombe a few weeks ago against Portsmouth and it was a tight game. We need to worry about ourselves and not other teams and our focus will be on our 11 and that our subs are prepared and ready to come on. We need to be committed to each other for 90 minutes plus injury time and we must do it for each other now.

"David Noble won't be available for the weekend. He is having another injection on Monday and that will have been his third one and he will then train on Wednesday next week. The sooner we get him back the better because his absence from the team has coincided with us not winning games so we need him back but the message to the rest of them is to step up for the shirt. Troy Brown went for a scan yesterday and it came back all clear. There is a lot of bruising and swelling there. I've just seen him come walking past without crutches so hopefully it's not as bad as people anticipated but realistically he will be out for 3/4 weeks.

"I am trying to get a loan in. If I go with the back four we ended with on Tuesday or I have to throw Mitch Brundle in then I have no problems with that but I am looking for another defender.

"Of course we want to play the right way on Saturday but, to play the right way, you must have the right attitude, desire and commitment. I am not questioning that with the boys but we need everybody to give more. If they think they have given enough then don't think that way - give more."

Cheltenham Town are 21/20 favourites this weekend and workhorse striker Terry Gornell is 11/2 to bag the first goal of the afternoon on Sky Bet currently.
