It was a day to celebrate as Cheltenham Town produced a first win of 2014 with a 1-0 victory away at Newport County this weekend.
The Robins were up against it from the very first whistle and Newport looked the favourites to open the scoring with numerous chances but Cheltenham's backline held on and they soon hit back through Ashley Vincent. Jermaine McGlashan has begun to cause Newport plenty of problems down the wing and his cross in the 23rd minutes was bundled into the back of the net by Ashley Vincent who was making his first league start of the season.
From then on Cheltenham began to grow in confidence and had numerous opportunities to double their lead through Byron Harrison and Matt Richards but it was soon the Robins defenders who took centre stage with excellent performances against the constant stream of crosses and long balls from their opposition. Mitch Brundle, on his debut, was superb but it was perhaps the performances of Steve Elliott, Michael Ihiekwe and Terry Gornell that stole the show. The full time whistle blew and lifted a huge weight off the shoulders of the Robins as they confirmed a solid win over a strong Newport side.
