Yates: We Weren't Good Enough

5 April 2014

Mark Yates hinted he may give younger players a chance to impress as the season comes to a close.

;Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates speaking to the press following his sides defeat against Southend United

"We took David Noble off with an injury, and we fell to pieces. It's not organisation, It's about having a bit of steel about you, it's about standing up. They went direct, they started pummeling balls in and we buckled. We stopped doing our jobs for 10 minutes. It was pathetic from the players.

"I'm really angry. In the first half we were the better team and I was really pleased. I wanted the more of the same second half but it was difficult losing David. And then we did the basics of defending wrong. And I don't just mean the back four.

"Maybe it is time to give one or two of the kids a game.

"I can't wait for this season to end. I want to play the next five games, get some points and see people playing for some pride. The worst thing is, 90% of the game we weren't bad. First half we were excellent but we stopped playing. We haven't got enough leaders out their within the group.

"We weren't good enough, I understand that and it's desperately disappointing. We had a go, Zack came on and looked lively but we didn't show enough to warrant getting back in the game.

"I'll take the blame for it, they're my team, I get that. But the players have also got to stand up and be counted but they've let me and they've let the supporters down today.

"I work with them every day and I can see the good things, but they have to stand up and be counted. The players have got to talk and they don't do enough of that, it's something we've got to get better at."
