Yates: Not Good Enough

26 November 2013

Mark Yates left frustrated with a failure to take chances in front of goal

Robins manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following this evening's 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers:

"I thought we played decent in the first half but pretty poorly in the second half and it's obviously frustrating. The players have got to realise the importance of it to everybody like ourselves the supporters because everyone wants to win and everybody cares but some of the stuff in the second half wasn't good enough. We didn't get the tempo we wanted but we should have taken a couple of chances in the first half but didn't and to be fair they stifled us and finished strongly. It was disappointing.

"There were too many square passes and too many back passes but when the ball was in the box we didn't have the bodies in there to score the goal we needed. They (Bristol Rovers) came here to frustrate and to their credit they did that. I thought their back four did ever so well and we just weren't playing anywhere near our best. Scott has made a good save from their right back, they had a goal disallowed which does look like offside on the DVD and they were better than us in the second half. I tell it like it is and we weren't good enough in the second half and we should have gone ahead but no matter what we did we just couldn't get enough chances to get the goal we wanted.

"We're all frustrated because we're drawing and not winning too many games. Someone's just shown me a couple of results and no-one in the top four have won so it's ridiculously tight at the moment so it is a case of persevering with the players and we'll have better day than we have had today for sure. We've got to keep believing and take our frustration out on Southend on Saturday.

"There's always positives and a clean sheet is one. We have been more ruthless defending but that's now got to coincide with us scoring goals as well. Delighted with the clean sheet but there wasn't too much to write home about in the second half.

"I'm still working hard on trying to make something happen (loan deal) and I'm pretty confident one or two will be in by Thursday so we'll wait and see."
