Yates: Mistakes Costly Again

2 November 2013

Mark Yates rues a defensive mistake once again with another 2 points dropped at home.

Mark Yates speaking to the media following this afternoon's 2-2 draw with York:

"Without a doubt we should have had 9 points from the last 3 games. People must be sick of hearing me say 'defensive mistakes' but they are costing us. The first goal was disappointing but the second one even more so because the game was there for us down the hill with the wind and we were playing alright. We completely switched off for a set piece for the first which is a cardinal sin but we got ourselves back in front again before half time. I think we should have really capitalised on that first half and got 2/3 goals. The mix up for their second was calamitous.

"Taking the positives, we played some good football, created good chances but goals take the wind out of your sails and gave the opposition help. We don't blame individuals outside of the dressing room and we take responsibility together but at the minute we are sick of someone coming in at the end of the game and someone saying sorry for something. They are not doing their jobs properly for 90 minutes and it's gone from one to the other and then to the other. It has cost us 4 points over the last 2 games with a shadow of a doubt. The league is so tight that we can be where we want to be but we have got to be more consistent and stop giving the goals away.

"We have to keep working and working and working at it so we can improve and cut the mistakes out. It's just people not doing their jobs at the moment and not taking responsibility but we'll keep working on it and I'll have a look at where we are and what I've got. It would be great to have put another player at the back from the bench but I'm looking round and I don't have another defender in the squad at the minute.

"We're not far away. We are a flick of a decision away because we are playing good football and we are creating but we keep conceding goals and we're having to score 2 or 3 goals to win games at home and that is just wrong.

"It was tough conditions for both sides but I thought we played some good football despite that. We're just all disappointed not to have won again. There were lots of positives but people must be banging their heads against a brick wall like I am because we're talking about positives and not winning games. We have got to start winning on a consistent basis because we believe we can match anyone in our league."
