Penna Puts Pen To Paper

21 May 2013

Russell Penn has signed a new two year deal and is confirmed as the club's new team captain.

We can confirm that Russell Penn has this afternoon signed a new two year contract with Cheltenham Town Football Club.

The energetic midfielder's original contract came to an end this summer but the former Kidderminster and Burton man's deal will now stretch through until the end of the 2014-15 campaign.

Russ, 27, made 51 appearances last season in the heart of midfield and score twice including one goal against Premier League side Everton in the FA Cup third round. Since the departure of Alan Bennett he has also carried the captain's armband on matchdays and he admitted he was only ever going to stick with the Robins.

"I was always going to sign this contract," said Russ.

"We just needed to sort a few bits and bobs out but it's all finalised and I'm happy to say I'll be here for the next two years at least. Being made team captain was a big part of why I signed because I've enjoyed having the armband for the last few months and I think it has improved my game.

"The main reason I signed though was because I have loved every minute of my last two years with this club. The aim every year will be to win promotion but we have been top seven for the last two years and that has been good despite the disappointment of missing out. I think the Gaffer, Neil, the staff and the board are all doing a fantastic job. The gaffer is trying to keep the squad together as much as possible and hopefully we can have another big push."

'Penna' originally signed ahead of the 2011-12 season after choosing to leave Burton Albion for the Abbey Business Stadium. During his two years with the club has gone on to make 100 appearances and has scored four goals.

Russ verbally agreed a contract with Mark Yates last week and he arrived at the Abbey Business Stadium this afternoon to put pen to paper before preparing for his wedding this summer.

"The Mrs has been in my ear about the wedding but that's part and parcel of it all," he added.

"I'm really looking forward to the wedding and the summer. I'm glad this is all sorted now so I can enjoy my time off and come back raring to go."
