Yates: Everyone Can Be Pleased

20 July 2013

Mark Yates reflects on a really good end to the week.

Cheltenham chief Mark Yates speaking to the local media following this afternoon's 2-1 victory against Gloucester City:

"It's a really good end to the week. The scoreline didn't really matter. We were very good in the first half and when you make that many changes in the second half it does tend to take something out of you. We changed the shape as well, had two wide men in the second half. We wanted to have a look at something different today.

"Everyone can be pleased, there were lots of really good things in the first half, it was a good goal from Sammy, he needs to carry on that form and Matt Richards was great.

"There was lots of good stuff. For the first 60 minutes we were great. I'll excuse them for getting sloppy after that many changes in the second half. It almost happened in the first half and I warned them of it. I didn't want them to get sloppy.

"We want to try different systems, we tried the diamond today and we'll have a look at a different one on Tuesday and possibly change it again next Saturday. We want to work out what suits us. We've got lots of good midfield players, we've got lots of good players who are comfortable in possession."

The team have spent the last week training in Wales at the University of Glamorgan.

"We've had a really good week down in Wales together. We've got lots of good work into them. They worked their socks off and in this head I can only commend them. They've been brillaint. To put in a performance like they did, particularly for the first hour, was really pleasing.

"The one real positive from the second half was young Zack Kotwica. He's been bright, he's been great, he's been with us all pre-season and he's got ability.

"I knew my team and who was going to play 60 minutes. Joe (Hanks) and Ed (Williams) needed 90 minutes so they played with the youth team this morning, Zack needed to get on the pitch and it was another 30 minutes for his week. It's been a good, tough week and they can  be really pleased.

"We've got more numbers which is better and I'm pleased with how the squad is coming together. Hopefully we've not picked up any injuries today and it's all about two weeks time and beyond that now."
