Yates: Deserved More

1 January 2013

Mark Yates believes his side deserved more from today's frustrating loss.

Mark Yates speaking to the media following today's 1-0 loss versus Oxford:

"It was tough conditions out there but I thought we were the better team and I won't moan too much apart from the lack of quality. We were the ones that were playing and pressing but it's a stupid goal we have gifted them. It was never a penalty. We huffed and puffed and I can't fault the effort but credit to Oxford because they're on a little run at the moment and fair play to them for that.

"The pitch wasn't great but that's no excuse with both teams trying to play on it. The referee has given them a penalty at a bad time for us and it has given them something to hang onto. We've had a number of chances at the end but we haven't been able to put any away. It's a tough place to come and we are where we are. We're pretty happy but we're disappointed not to have got at least a point for the travelling fans.

"It was a sloppy contested game with no real quality on show from both sides but it was tough out there and I was pleased with the attitude. We needed more quality and we may have won the game with some.

"Darren [Carter] jarred his knee as he went down earlier and Weso is looking at it right now. Chris Zebroski was a late shout and I'll let you all know more when I know more.

"It's a tightly contested league and no-one seems to be running away with it but we must make sure we are in there fighting. If we play like that and add the quality we know we can play with them we'll be alright.

"Everton has certainly not been a distraction, no chance. We've done alright but we obviously wanted to have done better. We'll look forward to that game now and it'll be a nice distraction. Everyone will want to be involved and that's good for me."
