Yates: A Missed Opportunity

12 January 2013

Mark Yates and his players are disappointed not to have taken all three points this afternoon

Mark Yates speaking to the press following today's 1-1 draw against York:

"To be fair we didn't deserve that. They've had one shot in the second half and it's gone in. We didn't mark properly and we're disappointed. It's a disappointed dressing room because we've dominated the second half and it was never going to be the easiest of games with the conditions and after Monday's match. They came here to frustrate us, they had pace on the break and we dealt with it well. Only when we conceded did we look under any pressure. We've got to keep our discipline at set pieces and we shouldn't concede goals as soft as that. Our performance, when we settled into the game, warranted more. We had to grind it out, get into the game and we had to work hard and we should have seen it through after going ahead but we haven't and we're disappointed. We played some decent football in the second half, scored a great goal, and could have had a couple more.

"It was windy, it's cold and it didn't help the atmosphere. We're not going to be playing like Brazil - we can't just turn it on like a tap. We had to work into the game today and I thought we got better and better. I thought our substitutions had an impact and we should have won the game.

"We had to get into the game but didn't want to open the pitch up too much with wingers. They would have had three or four in the middle of the park to our three so I'm happy with most things today bar the goal. When we score, and then concede one we think we're not going to win and we need to get that out of our system quickly. I can't fault the lads qualities and efforts in difficult conditions.

"Mo's running and his power and pace caused some problems. Harrad took the responsibility of holding the ball up once Mo came on and got himself a great goal. We should have won the game and unfortunately we haven't. I agree with Neil in the dressing room that it might be a point gained at the end of the season. We haven't been beaten while some of the others around the top of the table have today.

"Harrad's had a good couple of chances today. Shaun's always a threat and I thought he came alive once Mohamed was along side of him and well done to him. I thought Shaun and Jeff Goulding took a while to settle into the game but we always want more off everybody. The front two could maybe have been better in the first half but they could have had better service. Everything could have improved but we had to dig in against a resilient side. They had four big defenders and made it difficult for us.

"I thought Keith Lowe was outstanding today as I thought most of my back four were. It was just a shame we couldn't get that second goal because we had some chances and it was such a poor goal we conceded, but we need to move on from that and make sure we don't concede softly at set pieces."
