A last gasp goal from the penalty spot secured Cheltenham Town a point away at Roots Hall in Sky Bet League 2.
Mark Yates' Robins had started well and were perhaps the better team throughout the first half with Jermaine McGlashan and Kemar Roofe causing real problems for the Southend defence. Efforts from Roofe and David Noble came closest to breaking the deadlock but it was the host's winger Kevan Hurst that opened the scoring. Hurst found himself through on goal before Scott Brown produced a fine save at his feet but he could parry the ball back into the path of the winger and Hurst slammed the ball home to take a lead firmly against the run of play.
Cheltenham Town huffed and puffed in the second half and produced some good football but it was becoming likely that they wouldn't find a way through an increasingly stubborn Southend defence. However, a handball from Anthony Straker deep into injury time handed Cheltenham the chance they needed and Matt Richards made no mistake from the spot. A point was secured and it was no more than Cheltenham Town deserved.
