Howarth: Players Should Be Proud

21 December 2013

Neil Howarth was full of praise for the players after they defeated Fleetwood 2-0 this afternoon.

Neil Howarth speaking to the media following this afternoon's 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town:

"We scored after 35 seconds and then scored 35 seconds before the end of the game but we dominated the 90 in between and I think the lads deserve a pat on the back.

"The conditions probably weren't as bad as they were last week but we managed to keep a decent enough high line defensively today and the space was there in behind for Fleetwood but, because of the wind, they weren't able to do that. We also kept the ball well and we managed to get up the pitch well that way rather than perhaps look over the top. I think when you controlled it like we did in the first half and in the second then it doesn't matter what the conditions are like.

"The same players who were perhaps not showing how good they were earlier in the season really are at the moment and we have a real trust in each other at the moment and we're making a lot of good decisions at the moment. Collectively and individually we look like a good team.

"Connor Goldson has been excellent since training with the club and I think he was going to play today anyway because with all the games coming up it would have been nice to rest either Stevey or Troy anyway. He needed to play and I thought he was faultless. Forward players tend to make the headlines but Connor did everything right and didn't make any mistakes. He was as good as anybody today.

"It's certainly a good win because Fleetwood are, or were, third in the league and they were there for a reason. They are a good team, a good club and everything is set up for them to kick onTo turn up and put in a performance like that - they should be proud of themselves."
