A Cheltenham Town reserve side lost 3-2 this afternoon at the hands of Torquay United.
There were solid performances throughout the Cheltenham XI but Torquay took their chances well and ran out victors in this reserve friendly at the training ground.
Torquay started strongly and had a goal after just 5 minutes when a mistake from Joe Hanks let Danny Sullivan through on goal and the striker punished the Robins with his strike to make it 1-0. That early goal inspired the Cheltenham side however and their performance was much more improved for the remainder of the first half. Several Billy Jones crosses and set pieces threatened to create an opening for the Robins but opportunities were missed by Keith Lowe and Bobbie Dale.
The Robins really should have had a penalty after youth striker Bobbie Dale was brought down in the area but the referee played advantage despite Torquay having the upper hand and the opening was gone and Cheltenham were hard done by.
Cheltenham, overseen by Russell Milton and Neil Howarth, were undeservedly behind at the break but the Robins upped their performance in the second half and they soon had a deserved equaliser ten minutes into the half when trialist Callum Morris broke through the Gulls defence with raw pace before being blatantly shoved to the ground by the frustrated defender. Morris himself stepped up to take the spot kick and he made no mistake with a low drive into the bottom corner.
The Robins XI were gathering momentum but Torquay grabbed a goal against the run of play through Danny Sullivan and it was a screamer leaving Harvey Rivers with no chance. The Gulls striker slammed a shot in from 18 yards with Rivers stretching but it was unstoppable. Cheltenham made their only change of the game with Harry Williams replacing Ed Williams and the Robins were soon back on level terms courtesy of the substitute. A neat passing move saw the forward pick up on a pass from Bobbie Dale and Williams slotted it past the Torquay defender to level once again for the Robins.
Cheltenham could have won the game as the the minutes ticked by after Keith Lowe found Kotwica on the left but the newly signed professional's shot hit the base of the post denying the winger a goal after another positive performance. It was Torquay though that took their chances when midfielder Damon Lathrope volleyed in with just minutes remaining to snatch a win.
A loss but positive performances throughout the side and of course important game time for the first teamers looking to make a mark ahead of the weekend's game.
