Yates: One Big Effort

18 April 2013

Mark Yates is looking forward to an open game at St James Park this weekend as the Robins hit Devon.

Mark Yates speaking to the media ahead of this weekend's trip down to Exeter's St James Park:

"I was just speaking to John Atkinson about the amount of fans travelling this weekend and hopefully we can take as many as possible. 500 or 600 fans down there would be brilliant and it was a great initiative by the board and the Chairman to put on the free coaches. Now it's up to us to go down there and get a result. Both teams are desperate for a win so it should be a decent game of football.

"We have proven that when the support turns up and when we have had big crowds then we generally play well and win games. We are asking for one big effort and it doesn't necessarily mean we can do something due to results the other night but all we have to do is take care of ourselves. That means preparing properly, be as good as we can be and win our game. Our focus has to be solely on Saturday afternoon.

"If we play like we did against Gillingham and take that form into Saturday's game we can beat everybody and that has to be the key. We've done one or two things differently this week but it's about the players doing what they did last weekend. If we want a chance of automatic promotion then we have to win the game and we know that but there's also a little pressure on Exeter to win the game.

"Exeter won't be the most confident team in the world but they have good players and their manager knows the time of day. He will be his level-headed and calm best but I will also do what I need to do to get my players focused and I'm sure it will be a game where we can go and do ourselves proud. It's not in our own hands really because we need a few other results to go our way but I think you only need to look at how results have gone over the last six weeks in particular and you wouldn't want to pick your games. Who would have thought we'd get beaten by Plymouth and the next week beat Gillingham? Other teams have had the same problem and you cannot pick and choose games where you think you'll get three points. Two games to go and we still have a chance.

"Scott Brown is fine and he will be training today. Paul Benson is progressing well and the physio department had him in yesterday. Saturday has probably come too soon, or has it? I don't know. Weso is a miracle worker and Benno is really trying to push on and we'll see how things get on over the next few days. He knows his own body and mind so he has been really pleased with the progress he has made. He will be available as and when I can select him. Saturday is probably a little too soon but hopefully he will be involved in the Bradford game.

"Our aim is to win Saturday and the team won't alternate too much from last weekend I would have thought. Exeter have changed their formation regularly so we'll be mindful of that but if we are as good as we were on Saturday then that's all we can worry about because it'll give us a chance of a result. Our aim is to still have a chance of automatic promotion when we play Bradford. If results don't go our way then we know we have a guaranteed playoff place and we will re-focus but our sole aim is Saturday at Exeter."
