A massive 1-0 win over promotion rivals Northampton was the perfect end to Cheltenham Town's Easter weekend.

Defeat at Port Vale meant the Robins needed all three points to maintain realistic ambitions of automatic promotion and a first half goal from club captain Steve Elliott ensured Mark Yates' side were still in the hunt.

Cheltenham had a good first half and Byron Harrison could have put the hosts ahead early on had he pulled the trigger quicker on a clever freekick. Northampton were rigid and defended well but Steve Elliott snatched the lead on 44 minutes despite a good save from Lee Nicholls in the build up. Keith Lowe's cross found the head of Elliott and the Cobblers keeper reacted well with a good save but his defender could only clear the ball out to Elliott once again and the Robins' skipper slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Northampton were much better in the second half and Scott Brown was called upon a couple of times to keep his side clear of danger but the Cheltenham showed grit and determination to hold onto their lead and boost their promotion hopes.
