Yates demands defensive improvement

15 September 2012

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates interviewed after the 3-1 League Two defeat by Southend United at the Abbey Business Stadium

"I thought we were excellent for 44 minutes but then we switched off for the [Sean Clohessy] goal and we didn't quite recover from it. It was a bad goal to concede at the wrong time.

"Then the game changed in five minutes after half-time. We thought it was a massive free-kick [Ryan Cresswell on Steve Elliott] for the second goal. Steve was man-handled in the box but having said that we've got to be better and stronger.

"We didn't want to chase the game, and we created plenty of chances after the goals but we couldn't find the fluidity that we had played with in the first-half.

"We have to better than that. Their front two worked hard but I expect my back four to be stronger and defend set pieces a lot better.

"We still created five or six efforts after the goals, but some of our players didn't play as we wanted. We got near our best team on the pitch but we didn't move it around as much as we'd liked to have so credit to them for that.

"If we're going to be successful we can't be conceding goals like that. We were keeping it tight at the back but we switched off just before the break and it cost us. We need to be professional if we want to win games in this league.

"I'm disappointed with the goals but we thought there were infringements in the build-ups.

"We've had a good week on the training ground but unfortunatlely that counts for nothing on the Saturday. We've got a game to put it right on Tuesday [against Oxford United at the Abbey Business Stadium] but we won't beat ourselves over this result.

"We're unhappy with the start we've made and the reality is we've conceded three goals at home again but it's up to me to put that right, and I will."
