Yates: A Deserved Win

Manager pleased with a late deserved goal

Mark Yates talking to the media following today's 1-0 win over Burton Albion:

"It was a very hard fought and thoroughly deserved win. I thought our performance particularly in the first half was excellent. We should have gone in two or three up but the keeper's made a few good saves. They're a good side, we knew that, and we gave them all the respect that they deserve and they showed that they're a good resilient side who can cause you problems, but I thought we dealt with everything.
Scotty's had one good save when we took the lead but apart from that I thought our first half play deserved a win to be honest. You can call the goalkeeper a little bit unlucky with the mistake for the goal but he can be pleased with himself, I thought he was outstanding.

"You've always got to keep believing. You think maybe it's not your day when we had plenty of chances. The one save he made from Russell (Penn) in the second half, it was a very good save. We've got good players and we tried different things. We had three strikers on and we wanted to get bodies in the box and knew it would cause them problems and fortunately it ended correctly.

"Three defeats in 17 league games shows that we've had a good start to the season. We've got some good players with a great spirit amongst them. The lads worked tremendously hard when we asked them too and I think everyone deserves a little bit of a pat on the back. We've had a really tough week against two really tough, good sides and to come away with four points and two clean sheets, on the back of getting through to the next round of the cup, everyone deserves a little bit of credit and they can have that tonight. We won't be taking our foot off it but I'd like to praise my staff and players - they've been magnificent so far this season."
