Yates: A Deserved Point

6 November 2012

Mark Yates praises his team's strength and calmness as they earn a point at the league leaders.

Mark Yates speaking to the media following this evening's 0-0 draw with Gillingham:

"I thought we were really good particulary in the first half. We took a bit of a battering in the second half but I don't think they had too many chances. They have scored four goals here a few times this season and it was important we didn't give them anything to hang onto because they are a good side. We got a bit of luck in the first half when Kedwell hit the bar but I think we deserved that luck because we were outstanding in that half. If we were a little more clinical with our chances then it really would have given us something to hold onto. We've shown that I have a team of men and we needed that here tonight.

"Their crosses and set pieces were big for them but we talked about that and I felt we dealt well with that. We didn't want to come here and enjoy being in a top of the table clash but then get beaten. It was important not to lose and to be men when dealing with crosses and set pieces because they're really good and they mixed the game up well. The second half was a bit of an onslaught but we also talked about having the calmness to defend for our lives and we managed to do that.

"I thought we had three or four really good chances in the first half. One of them was when Mo broke and it was 3 on 1 but to be fair the young defender has made an outstanding tackle and he was good all game. Some of our football was really good but we must continue that now.

"We deserved a draw at least. They had more possession in the first half but we were organised and dangerous on the break. You have to stand up and be counted and other teams have come here to have four put past them so we did really well tonight."
