REPORT: Forest Green Res. 3-6 Robins Res.

17 April 2018

Striker George Lloyd grabbed a clinical brace as Cheltenham Town Reserves defeated Forest Green Rovers Reserves in a nine-goal Central League South West encounter in Chippenham.

Lloyd cracked a double - to take his tally this season to 40 goals in all competitions - while

Matt Bower, Jake Andrews, Archie Brennan and Danny Wright also found the net for the Robins.

It was an impressive performance from the Robins with several player keen to impress watching manager Gary Johnson.

The Robins started brightly and almost opened the scoring after 18 seconds when Wright found space and forced Belford into a smart save.

But the visitors did take the lead after four minutes when Andrews swung a corner over and Bower powerfully headed home.

Andrews added a second on 14 minutes when Will Dawes delivered a devilish deep cross and Brian Graham fed the midfielder to drive hard and low into the bottom corner of the net.

Lloyd threatened a third with a direct run that saw a home defender booked for his attempted tackle.

Wright just failed to lob the home stopper just after the half hour but moments later it was three after a mistake at the back saw Brennan roll into an unguarded net.

Rovers did get a goal back just before the break when one of five trialists lobbed home after latching onto a long ball in blustery conditions.

The second half saw more goals with the Robins extending the lead four minutes after the restart when Wright nodded a Lloyd cross home via the post.

Rovers reduced the deficit when Charlie Cooper rolled home a penalty but normal order was restored when a lovely team move saw substitute Fin Clift pick out Lloyd to crack home a finish into the roof of the net.

Clift almost scored himself with a sweetly struck volley before a second penalty, this time from Dan Wishart, five minutes from time.

However, it was the visitors who had the final word and moments after Andrews almost scored from 50 yards out with an audacious shot a long ball found Lloyd who showed all his class to dink the ball home.

Robins: Clayton, Cranston (Duncan 66), Forster (Clift 70), Bower, Handley, Andrews, Brennan, Dawes, Lloyd, Graham, Wright.

FGR: Belford, Trialist, Davidson, Trialist, Wishart, Bray, Cooper, Simpson, Trialist, Trialist, Proctor. Subs: Pickering, Anderson, Moran, Madden, Trueman.
