Report and reaction: Robins 2-0 Blackpool

13 February 2024

Elliot Bonds‘ brace helped the Robins to back-to-back League One wins with a 2-0 victory over Blackpool at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

A left footed finish in the first half and a right footed effort in the second from the midfielder on his 100th appearance for the club ensured another vital three points Town's survival quest.

“The performance was very good," said manager Darrell Clarke post-match.

“We limited them, defended really well as an 11 and I’m really pleased and proud of the boys.

“Back-to-back wins is big at any level but at our level and situation we’re in, its massive.”

The game was devoid of any quality in the first 25 minutes with Matty Taylor hooking a ball goalwards early on that was blocked by Daniel Grimshaw before the linesman raised his flag.

The Robins came to life soon after with Bonds volleying wide before George Lloyd headed over a golden chance from a couple of yards after a hanging Sean Long free-kick was nodded back across goal by Curtis Davies.

Three minutes later, the Robins were ahead after a scramble in the box saw the ball fall to Bonds and he squeezed the ball under Grimshaw with his left footed strike.

Chances to double the lead followed shortly after with Will Ferry lashing a left footed strike toward goal but again Grimshaw was in the way to thwart Town.

The Robins remained in the ascendancy after the break with Lloyd being denied by Grimshaw after going through one on one, with the follow up being headed just over by Bonds.

A massive chance to extend the lead came in the 74th minute when Lloyd was fouled in the penalty box, however substitute Aidan Keena’s penalty was well struck but well saved by Grimshaw.

11 minutes later one did become two after a smooth turn from Bonds in the box gave him the space he needed to fire across goal and into the far corner.

Town very nearlt had a third through Ferry moments later, but 2-0 it finished making it two win in a row for the second time under Clarke this term.
