The Robins’ home league opener for the 2023/24 campaign ended in a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.
A first half brace from Dion Charles either side of a Liam Smith own goal saw the visitors to a comfortable victory.
The Robins started the game on the front foot, as they did Tuesday evening, but couldn’t threaten Nathan Baxter in the visitors’ goal.
The away side soon found their feet in the game and a quick give and go between Charles and Victor Adeboyejo saw the former open the scoring.
Bolton remained on the front foot and found their second goal 15 minutes later as Smith inadvertently deflected Aaron Morley’s free kick past Luke Southwood.
The next goal followed four minutes later as Charles added his second with a curling right footed effort after Southwood turned one around the post from Adeboyejo.
Southwood was called into action again to deny Charles his hat-trick with a low save moments later before the Robins surged forward themselves, Rob Street firing an effort into the side netting.
The visitors continued to dictate proceedings as the crossbar stopped an over hit Jack Irelade cross from sneaking in and a diving header from Lewis Freestone prevented another cross reaching its desired target.
After this, the Robins grew into the game more and were denied a penalty after Street collided with the Bolton captain in the box.
In the 79th minute, the home side came the closest they had all day as Freestone’s powerful header from a corner needed to be parried over.
Another chance came deep into stoppage time for the Robins as the hardworking Street drove past his man and forced Baxter to tip his effort around the upright.
