Robins 1 - 2 West Ham United u21's

18 October 2022

Cheltenham Town fell to a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United u21’s at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium in the Papa Johns Trophy.

Despite the defeat, the Robins will progress into the next round of the competition after coming in second place in Southern Group C.

Charlie Brown grabbed the only goal for Cheltenham after just a quarter of an hour before Will Greenidge and Freddie Potts put the Hammers ahead in the game.

There was a lively opening to the game, with Cheltenham having the better of the play in the first few minutes.

The Robins would make a breakthrough as Brown nodded home from close range after George Lloyd played the ball back across after Ben Williams’ cross.

West ham looked to pull one back with Keenan Appiah-Forson running through on goal, however his shot went just past Shaun Macdonald's far post.

Greenidge would then pull West Ham level with a drilled shot into the bottom right corner of the goal from close range.

Tom Bradbury did well to keep the Robins level, tracking the run of Gideon Kodua into his own box before deflecting his shot wide of the goal.

However, the Robins couldn’t hold onto the draw as Potts let go of a driven shot from outside the box, into the bottom left of Macdonald's goal to give West Ham the lead.

Bradbury almost pulled Cheltenham level as a ball fell to him from a corner, however, his header was blocked in a crowd of bodies before getting to the goal.

The Robins pushed for an equalizer as Lloyd stormed into the box and drilled a ball across the ground, Christian Norton got on the end of the cross, however, couldn’t guide it goal-wards to level the scores.
