Report: Robins 3-1 Salford City

10 January 2023

The Robins defeated League Two outfit Salford City 3-1 at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium in the Papa John’s Trophy quarter-finals.

New signing Will Goodwin joined Ryan Broom and Liam Sercombe on the scoresheet to help ensure Cheltenham’s progression in the competition.

The first chance of the game fell to debutant Goodwin as Sean Long whipped in a ball to the striker, whose header went just over the bar.

Another chance would come the way of Goodwin, as he played a smart one-two with Broom before putting the ball wide of the post.

It would be Salford who took a lead early on however, with Hendry putting the ball past Luke Southwood with an acrobatic effort following a corner.

The Robins searched for an immediate response through Elliott Bonds, whose effort was denied following a great save from Alex Cairns in the Salford goal.

Alfie May would also go close to bringing the game level as his effort, which was destined for the top corner, was tipped onto the crossbar by Cairns.

A goal would eventually come for the Robins as Broom put the ball in the back of the net following a smart pullback by Ben Williams.

The Robins went in search of the lead in the second half as the ball fell to Liam Sercombe in the box following a long throw, with the shot eventually going just over the bar.

Sercombe would give Cheltenham the lead as Ryan Jackson came down the right, pulling the ball back to Goodwin whose shot hit the port before falling to Sercombe to turn the ball in.

Goodwin would get his debut goal, powering the ball past Cairns after being played in by Sercombe.

Bonds looked to get in on the actions as his left-footed strike from outside the area required a good save from Cairns.
