Report: Derby County 2-0 Robins

28 February 2023

The Robins fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home against Derby County at Pride Park.

Goals from David McGoldrick and Lewis Dobbin were enough for the Rams to ensure victory on the night.

An early chance came for the home side as McGoldrick cut in from the right-hand side of the box before curling his effort wide.

Alfie May ran in on the Derby goal after being played in by Luke Southwood, however, a sliced clearance from Eiran Cashin proved enough to see the ball safely reach Joe Wildsmith in goal.

The Robins continued their pressure as Ryan Broom ran free down the right-hand side, before cutting in and seeing his shot deflected out for a throw-in.

The home side did manage to take the lead before half time however as Conor Hourihane’s ball was brought down in the box before being smashed home by McGoldrick to give the Rams a lead.

Cheltenham looked to pull one back immediately in the second half, with James Olayinka finding Glen Rea on the edge of the box, whose shot drilled into the home fans.

Will Ferry almost caught out Wildsmith with a cheeky free-kick from a good area towards the front post, his effort was spilled and found Taylor Perry whose effort was deflected wide.

Derby released McGoldrick down the right-hand side, the forward found Dobbin in the box who slotted home to double the Rams lead.

In an attempt to pull one back, Liam Sercombe played a short free-kick to Elliott Bonds whose shot flew high over the Derby bar.
