Robins 2, Coventry City 0 – highlights andreport

13 November 2018

Apologies, this video is unvailable.

Cheltenham Town have beaten Coventry City 2-0 at the Jonny-Rocks stadium to progress in the Checkatrade trophy.

Goals from Jacob Maddox and Will Boyle either side of half time secured the points for Cheltenham putting them top of Group M.

Coventry offered little in response Jodi Jones was the only one to test Scott Flinders in the Cheltenham goal, pulling two efforts just wide in the first half.

A positive result for Michael Duff’s side who head to Notts County on Saturday for a tough test.

Cheltenham had the ball in the net early, Kelsey Mooney tapping in, but it was ruled out for a foul. Michael Duff’s side began the game well, having much of the ball in the opening exchanges.

Mooney had the next chance for the home side, breaking through on goal with a good turn of pace, he slid his shot towards goal, but it went wide.

Cheltenham were enjoying success with diagonal balls out to Ryan Broom on the right-hand side, he caused a lot of problems for the Coventry left-back.

It was from Broom on the right that Cheltenham’s next chance came, a good ball into the box found Tyrone Barnett on the volley forcing a solid save from Liam O’Brien in goal.

Jodi Jones was first to test Scott Flinders for Coventry, he had a couple of shots on goal which went wide of Flinders’ right, they caused no real problems for the Cheltenham number one in the opening half an hour.

Jacob Maddox then opened the scoring for Cheltenham in the 35th minute, another cross from Ryan Broom went all the way out to the back post, Tom Field poked it back across the box and Maddox smashed home from 8 yards.

Maddox challenged O’Brien in goal again just minutes after his goal, weaving his way into a shooting position he was denied by a toe when he eventually got his shot away.

Cheltenham’ first chance of the second half was Will Boyle making it 2-0 just after the restart. The Robin’s had a freekick, whipped in by Connor Thomas, and met by Boyle with a fantastic header which went straight past O’Brien.

Jordan Shipley had Coventry’s first chance of the second half, but it wasn’t much of an opportunity. His long-range effort was struck well over the bar.

Cheltenham continued to control the game as the second half went on. Chris Hussey was introduced to the left side of the back three, replacing Jordan Forster, and Craig Alcock came on for Jacob Maddox, moving Ryan Broom into Maddox’s attacking midfield position.

Ryan Broom’s running down the right earned him the man of the match award, he continued to stretch the Coventry back line deep into the second half.

Coventry’s night was summed up by their two chances in extra time, first a cross to Bakayoko was mis controlled by the forward. Then a cross from the other side found Jordan Thompson, who’s header went well over the bar and was met by a punch of the air in frustration.

The win sets up a home tie for Cheltenham in the next round.
