Although born in London Marley Watkins spent much of his early life in Swansea, South Wales and was a Schoolboy player at Swansea City until the age of 16. Released by Swansea in 2007, he was spotted by Cheltenham Town coach Bob Bloomer at the Football League exit trials and went on to impress in a handful of trial matches for the youth team, scoring a good goal in one game against Plymouth Argyle.
Marley signed a Scholarship with Cheltenham Town in 2007 and went on to establish himself as a regular member of the Under-18 side, also making a handful of appearances for the reserves. A confident runner with the ball and good dribbler who can also deliver quality crosses, Marley caught the eye with some good performances for the first team squad in the 2008 pre-season and was given a first team squad number as a result.
He made his first team debut as a substitute on the opening day of the 2008-09 season away to Northampton Town in Coca-Cola League One and at that time became Cheltenham's youngest ever Football League player. During the second half of that campaign Marley made more first team appearances, including a handful of League One starts.
