Birmingham-based Gavin is a big, strong central defender with a powerful shot, who began his career as a trainee at Walsall and was named on the bench for the first team without making a Football League appearance.
Robins manager John Ward had been impressed with Gavin having seen him in action for Walsall Reserves so offered him a pre-season trial at Whaddon Road. Gavin scored on his debut in a friendly against local club Bishop's Cleeve and signed a short-term contract at Whaddon Road in July 2004.
This contract was subsequently extended and Gavin turned out to be the 'find' of the season, establishing himself alongside Shane Duff in the heart of defence and winning the club's Young Player of the Year award.
Throughout the promotion winning campaign of 2005-06 Gavin proved his versatility when either defending or moving up as an emergency forward. The following season he also made appearances at right-back and in midfield.
Injuries ravaged the Robins squad during season 2007-2008, particularly in the back four, and Gavin was forced to play through the pain barrier.
Despite a nagging injury he still managed to record 30 first team starts over the course of the season, including some memorable performances alongside young Andy Gallinagh.
Eventually by mid February even Gavin was forced to go under the surgeon's knife; but he is now on the way to a full recovery and looking forward to returning to action early in the 2008-09 season.
