David is a product of the Cheltenham Town Centre of Excellence programme, having joined the Robins from his local club Cinderford Town at the age of 17.
David played cricket and rugby to a good level in his school days but he excelled at football and made his senior debut for Cinderford in the Southern League at the age of only 15. After only a short time at Whaddon Road he was offered a professional contract and became a regular starter in the centre of midfield for the reserve team.
His first team chance came in an important relegation battle at Huddersfield Town in February 2003 when right-back Antony Griffin was injured during the warm-up. David stepped in as a late replacement and took the position immediately. He went on to make 12 starting appearances in season 2002-2003 and earned himself a new improved contract as a result.
He has been a regular member of the squad since then, making a number of appearances in either the centre of midfield or wide on the right.
David won the club's young player of the year award in season 2003-2004 and played an important part throughout the promotion winning campaign of 2005-06.
He registered his first goal for the club at the end of that season and following the departure of Northern Ireland international Grant McCann to Barnsley in January 2007, David stepped into his shoes to form a highly effective central midfield partnership with John Finnigan.
Although 2007-08 was another challenging campaign for the club, it was the season in which 'Birdy' fully emerged to make his mark. Forced to play with a variety of partners David quietly and effectively patrolled the middle of the pitch and put in some magnificent performances to help keep the club in League One. As a consequence he was the runaway winner of the 2007-08 Supporters Player of the Year award.
