Cheltenham Town recorded their first win of the 2010-11 npower League Two season with an enthralling 3-2 victory this afternoon.

Thomas (2) and Goulding were the scorers in what was an exciting game from start to finish. Ada put Crewe ahead in the 4th minute but Thomas scored twice to  put Cheltenham back in the lead. Crewe pulled level after the break through Donaldson but Jeff Goulding scored his first for the club to claim the three points.

It was exciting, it was full of goals and it was everything Mark Yates wanted from his new look Robins squad. If you missed today's game then do not miss the next one.

Wonderful start to the game for Cheltenham. Goulding stole possession in the middle of the pitch and Smikle found a lovely pass to Low on the right wing. The winger's cross was perfect and Wesley Thomas's header was saved well by Chelsea loanee Rhys Taylor.

Crewe's first attack looked dangerous as Donaldson bypassed Riley but Danny Andrew was quick to clear the ball away for a corner

GOAL: Patrick Ada opened the scoring with a volley from the corner. The big centre back pulled free of the Cheltenham defence and struck a lovely shot past Brown.

Cheltenham went on the attack straight from the kick off and Goulding fired in a shot only to see it denied by a last ditch sliding tackle. Josh Low picked up  on the loose ball and fired in a low drive but a Crewe defender made a good block and the ball was cleared from danger.

A long ball into the area from Keith Lowe found Wesley Thomas but he couldn't  get a real strike in at goal and it went over the crossbar.

Another good build up from Cheltenham ended in a quick snap shot from Frankie Artus but the strike bounced off the turf and to the hands of Taylor.

Brilliant play from Goulding and Thomas who linked up so well to panic the Crewe defence. A good touch from Goulding released Thomas and the striker showed some good footwork to fire in a shot but it took a deflection and Crewe breathe easy. Moments later an Artus cross found the head of Riley but the effort was high over the crossbar.

Decent freekick from Frankie Artus was fired in at goal from 20 yards out on the left wing but the strike was just over the bar.

Danny Andrew struck a sweet freekick from the left and it was heading straight for goal but for a fantastic save by Taylor. Crewe are really up against it here.

A long ball from Westwood into Cheltenham's area almost found the feet of Calvin Zola but the big striker couldn;t find his feet and let the chance slip.

GOAL: Wesley Thomas has put Cheltenham equal and it is no more than what the Robins deserve. Andrew's freekick was fired in from the right and Taylor made another great save but made another fine save after Smikle punced on the rebound. The ball wasn't cleared though and at the third attempton, Thomas stuck the ball in the net from the far post.

Artus almost put Cheltenham ahead with a delightful strike but the outstanding Taylor made another great save.

Josh Low hit a decent low drive from just outside the area following some fluid passing from the Robins midfield but it just went wide of the post.

SUBSTITUTION: Martin Riley pulled up with an injury and was replaced by Dave Bird. Lowe moves into the centre and Bird slips into the right back position.

BOOKING: Thomas was yellow carded for a harmless challenge with Tootle. The Robins striker didn't do much wrong there.

Should have been a goal for Crewe. Miller released a great pass to Donaldson on the left hand side of the area. The big striker pulled away from Lowe and fired in a shot across goal but it went wide.

Cheltenham got lucky because it looked as if Andrew had brought down Tootle in the area but the referee has given a freekick just outside. It looked inside the area but it was close and a brave call from the referee.

GOAL: Wesley Thomas scored his second of the afternoon after pouncing on a rebound following a good save from Taylor. It was Smikle's close range effort that was saved but Thomas was quick to react and put Cheltenham ahead. Moments later Crewe had appealed to the referee for a Danny Andrew obstruction on Miller.

Luke Murphy released a dangerous low drive from 30 yards but Brown saved well and turned it round the post.

Half Time: Robins 2-1 Crewe

GOAL: Clayton Donaldson pulled Crewe level with a backpost header from a Westwood freekick on the right.

Lee Bell almost scored an own goal whilst trying to clear a cross but his clumsy clearance just slipped wide of the goal.

BOOKING: Calvin Zola was booked for a very late and clumsy challenge on Michael Pook.

Keith Lowe rose well to head an effort in at goal from the corner but he couldn't keep it down and it went over.

More fluid passing football from Cheltenham and it ended with a good strike from Frankie Artus. The midfielder's low drive just went wide of the post.

GOAL: Goulding has scored his first Cheltenham goal and he really does deserve it. The attack came from a simple roll out from Brown and it was Thomas who provided the assist. His pass found Goulding in the area and the striker made his own space to turn, shoot and deceive the keeper to score Cheltenham's third of the afternoon.

20 yard strike from Artus stung the hands of Taylor but it was a good save from the Crewe keeper.

Wesley Thomas made a fair challenge on Rhys Taylor and the goalkeeper completely missed the ball he was trying to collect. The ball was dribbling towards the goal with the home crowd urging it to go in but Ada made the goal line clearance.

SUBSTITUTION: Shaun Jeffers was brought on for the outstanding Weskey Thomas.

Should have been 3-3 but Scott Brown made an excellent point blank save to deny the headed effort of Miller.

Dangerous cross from Westwood was calmly cancelled out by the outstretched leg of Dave Bird.

35 yard shot from Frankie Artus but it was went very high and clattered into the front of the Speedy Skips stand.

SUBSTITUTION: Nick Powell made his football league debut when he replaced the very quiet Clayton Donaldson.

Jeff Goulding came agonisingly close to connecting his head with a Shaun Jeffers cross but it just bypassed the striker and out of danger.

Westwood's long, long drive into the box evaded the diving header of Zola but it also took Brown by surprise and struck the post.

+2: Crewe are really piling on the pressure but the Robins defence is standing firm.

+3 SUBSTITUTION: Jeff Goulding was replaced by Robin Shroot.
