Cheltenham vs Darlington
 3 - 3

20/04/2010
Venue:
Whaddon Road
Attendance:

Referee:

Cheltenham had been 3-0 down in the first half but a spirited comeback has all but confirmed league football for the Robins next season.

It had been a sloppy start from Cheltenham but goals from Pook, Richards and Elito has edged Cheltenham closer to security. Yates will undoubtedly be happy with some of the team spirit on show in tonight's second half.

The Robins made four changes to their line-up ahead of tonight's game with Darlington FC with Dave Bird (calf) the only forced change. Bird picked up a calf injury against Rotherham on Saturday and was replaced with Matt Thornhill in the heart of midfield. Lee Ridley, Aaron Lescott and Julian Alsop all replaced Danny Andrew, Andy Gallinagh and Barry Hayles respectively.

3 GOAL: Darlington made it 1-0 through Tadgh Purcell. Mor Diop played a good ball through to the striker and it was a great finish into the top right corner.

5 GOAL: Ashley Eastham scored an own goal. Tadgh Purcell put the cross in and it looked as if a Cheltenham clearance went horribly wrong off the young centre back's trailing leg,

10: Scott Brown denied Purcell at the far post with a low save. The striker got a neat little header in on goal but Brown was able to get down low and push it wide for a corner.

12: Effort from Matt Thornhill on the edge of the box but the strike was poor by his standards. He dragged the shot wide and the subsequent cross was cleared eventually by the Darlington defence.

14: Justin Richards beat the offside trap to put pressure on the Quakers defence and his lay off to Elito was a sensible one. Elito's cross found Thornhill on the edge of the box but his shot cleared the crossbar and flew into the stand.

16: Good work from Richards up front. He picked up on a decent long ball from Ridley and got a strike in at goal but Redmond was equal to it.

24: Good attacking play from Cheltenham which saw an excellent piece of link up play with Thornhill and Richards. Thornhill burst through the middle of midfield and played a simple pass to Richards. The striker produced a decent back flick to put the ball in the path of the rampaging midfielder who released a shot from 25 yards but it flew over the goal.

27 GOAL: Mor Diop put Darlington 3-0 up with a simple strike through the legs of Brown. It was Duff's sloppy backpass that put the pressure on the Robins number one and Diop pulled off a calm strike.

27 SUBSTITUTION: Andy Gallinagh replaced Shane Duff who may have picked up an injury.

29 GOAL: Michael Pook got one back for Cheltenham but it was undoubtedly a cross! Pook found himself in possession on the right wing and his long looped cross dipped over Redmond and put Cheltenham back in the game.

32: Mark Bower almost scored an own goal. Thornhill whipped in a freekick from the right wing and the Darlington defender's dodgy header just went wide of his own near post.

38: Matt Thornhill attempted an overhead kick following the long throw from Pook but the effort went wide of the post.

39 SUBSTITUTION: Darlington replaced Purcell with Michael Smith.

Half Time: Robins 1-3 Darlington

46 GOAL: Justin Richards scored a cracker to put the Robins right back into the game. Alsop's header found Josh Low who threaded a through ball to Richards. The striker danced through the Darlington defence and put a calm left footed finish past Redmond in the goal. Game on.

48: Gary Smith almost put Darlington back in full charge but it was a great save from Brown. Brown was at full stretch to stop Smith's effort.

52: Great effort on goal from Josh Low. He chipped in a great effort at goal but Darlington's Alan White got his head to the ball before the damage was done.

55: Matt Thornhill dispossessed Mark Bower in the middle of midfield and broke away into the Quakers area. He laid the ball off to Josh Low but the winger's strike swept across the face of goal and it's another near miss for Cheltenham.

60: Michael Pook is the latest Robins player to come close. Alsop collected the long ball and laid it off into the path of Pook who smashed the ball first time in at goal only to see it miss by inches.

64 GOAL: What a goal! Superb run from Michael Pook to collect the ball on the right wing. Pook whipped in a stunning cross and found Medy Elito charging into the area. Not satisifed with the tap in Medy has just flicked the ball in Thierry Henry style. Outstanding half from Cheltenham so far but Michael Pook has got to take a lot of credit.

72: Josh Low almost made it 4-3 Cheltenham. He stormed down the right wing and sent in a long driven cross which almost found it's way into Redmond's net.

72: Darlington went straight up the other end and Chris Moore had a decent effort deflected over by the head of Andy Gallinagh.

73 SUBSTITUTION: Marley Watkins was brought on to replace Josh Low.

78 SUBSTITUTION: Barrington Hayles was subbed on for Julian Alsop.

82: Marley Watkins has played well since he came on and he's definately getting stuck in. He just had a good run down the left and whipped in a good cross but Redmond was quick to collect.

83: Michael Pook just missed an opportunity.  The ball found it's way to Cheltenham's stand-in captain but he couldn't connect and the chance is wasted.

84: Chris Moore tried an ambitious strike from 25 yards but it almost paid off. It just dropped over Brown's goal but a good effort from the Quakers.

89: Very close to 4-3 Cheltenham there. The long throw in from Pook dropped dangerously into the area and Hayles was inches to securing League football for Cheltenham next season but Redmond gathered in haste.

90+1: Cheltenham fans are starting to do the conga and who can blame them? Great turnaround from the Robins.
