What a difference three days makes.

Following the shambles at Edgar Street on Saturday, Cheltenham Town recorded a remarkable result to dump high-flying Oldham Athletic out of the FA Cup.

The Latics, who knocked out Everton at Goodison Park in this competition in January, thumped the Robins 4-0 on this ground at the end of August but tonight Cheltenham were superb and booked a second round trip to Morecambe on November 29.

Okay, Martin Allen's side rode their luck towards the end of this one, and there was seven minutes of added-on time to endure following an injury to the referee 20 minutes from time in which Scott Brown was at his very best.

But Lewis Montrose's first senior goal - the day after his 20th birthday - coupled with a first clean sheet since August 16 was enough to record their third FA Cup win out of three against the 1990 and 1994 semi-finalists.

TEAM NEWS:
Martin Allen made five changes to the side that were beaten 3-0 at Hereford United on Saturday. In came Scott Brown in goal, Lewis Montrose as a central midfielder alongside Ian Westlake and Lee Ridley on the left. Damian Spencer and Ashley Vincent, who were second half substitutes at Edgar Street, formed the attack. David Bird went to right back with Andy Gallinagh joining Drissa Diallo in central defence. Shane Higgs, Lloyd Owusu, Paul Connor and Josh Payne drop to the bench while Darren Kenton misses out with an injury.

2nd minute: Cheltenham turn defence into attack after Oldham take a corner from the right. Veteran goalkeeper Mark Crossley dashes out of his area and amid the defensive confusion, Vincent pokes a shot which deflects off Ruben Hazell's back for a corner.

4: Vincent calls Crossley into a smart save with a stinging effort from a tight angle on the left.

6: Another slick Cheltenham move culminates in Diallo heading on target from 10 yards, although Crossley holds onto it.

7: Daniel Jones thumps a 25-yard free-kick high over Shane Higgs' bar.

12 BOOKING: Montrose picks up the first caution of the night for a late challenge during a dangerous Oldham move which ends with Kevin Maher firing over from distance. The referee allowed to play to continue but carded the midfielder once the ball was out of play.

22 GOAL: Oldham Athletic 0, Cheltenham Town 1
Cheltenham respond to the disappointing defeat at Hereford in positive style and take a deserved 22nd minute lead after winning a throw-in on the right-hand side. Bird sends it in, Spencer makes a nuisance of himself in an attempt to flick it on which creates some space for Montrose eight yards out, who chests it down and applies a clinical finish under the frame of Crossley to register his first senior goal.

25: Chris Taylor heads Kelvin Lomax's delivery from the right wide at the far post.

36 SUBSTITUTION: Oldham boss John Sheridan makes the first switch of the night, replacing Deane Smalley with Matt Wolfenden in a straight swap.

45: Goalkeeper Brown comfortably takes Stefan Stam's header after Lomax sends in a corner from the right.

HALF TIME: Oldham Athletic 0, Cheltenham Town 1

48: Oldham carve the first meaningful chance of the second period two minutes after the restart. Crossley pumps a clever ball forward from a free-kick deep inside his own half into the feet of Alessandra. The striker in turn slips a clever ball into the path of Wolfenden but the substitute's side-footed effort is gathered by Brown.

52 SUBSTITUTION: Former Wigan winger Andy Liddell is a 52nd minute substitution for Stefan Stam in an attacking move by Latics boss Sheridan.

57: Left back Jones clips a menacing ball towards the back post which sails over the head of Gallinagh and falls to Alessandra, however Brown pulls of a decent save to prevent the Oldham frontman from close-range.

61 BOOKING: Wolfenden goes into the book for an untidy challenge on Ian Westlake.

62: Owusu delivers a dangerous cross after a strong Montrose challenge sets up the striker on the left, but Hazell is alive to the danger and clears from inside his own six-yard box.

66 SUBSTITUTION: Allen withdraws Vincent and sends on Paul Connor to join Owusu up front.

67: A close shave for Cheltenham. Wolfenden gets in behind Bird down the left and cuts it back from the byline to create a shooting chance for Taylor 12 yards from goal. Alan Wright though pops up with a superb last-ditch lunge to deny the striker.

70: Fourth official Mr. R Fletcher replaces referee Andy Bates after an injury rules out the official for the remaining 20 minutes of the contest.

77 SUBSTITUTION: Kieran Lee takes the place of Maher for the closing stages of the game.

81: Jones bursts through the middle and tees up Wolfenden 18 yards out, but the striker releases a shot straight at Brown who holds on to it.

86: Substitute Lee goes agonisingly close to squaring the game when he heads Jone's free-kick inches past Brown's left upright. The replacement rifles a shot straight down the throat of the Cheltenham number one a moment later, but again he takes it cleanly.

89: Brown punches clear Taylor's vicious curler from distance before it is cleared. The Robins are riding their luck here.

90: The fourth official holds the board up to indicate a minimum of seven minutes of added-on time, presumably as a result of the injury to the referee.

90+5: Brown pulls off wonderful save to prevent Alessandra taking the game to extra time. A scramble ensues in the box but in the end, Connor clears the danger and Cheltenham cling on.
