Cheltenham Town responded in perfect fashion to last weekend's disappointing defeat at Carlisle with victory over Huddersfield Town in another entertaining game.
Grant McCannThe home side turned in a much-improved performance to earn their fourth home win of the campaign, albeit with a slice of luck right at the end.
The Robins looked set for victory after goals either side of half time by Grant McCann (right) and JJ Melligan, but substitute Pawel Abbot halved the deficit with five minutes remaining before Mark Hudson somehow missed a fantastic opportunity to level things up from close range at the death.
But that would have been harsh on Cheltenham, who deserved their three points after controlling lengthy passages of the game with a show full of energy and commitment.
Robins' Manager John Ward named both of his mid-week loan aquisitions in his 16 and welcomed back Brian Wilson after missing the defeat at Carlisle through illness. Wilson was restored on the left-hand side of midfield at the expense of Mickey Bell, while McCann returned to the centre after international duty with Northern Irelad in the week. Centre half Keith Lowe, aquired from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday, came in for Jamie Victory, who dropped to the bench.
Huddersfield boss Peter Jackson made two changes from the team defeated at Crewe last weekend and they could have taken an early lead after creating a couple of decent chances in a pretty evenly-contested opening. Shane Higgs saved well at the feet of Luke Beckett before the striker called the Cheltenham number one into a fine full stretch stop to his right from 16 yards.
But it was the home side who claimed the first goal of the afternoon with ten minutes on the clock after Steve Guinan had held up a long ball forward by Wilson. The striker rolled the ball to Odejayi and he stabbed it through the defence for an unmarked McCann to fire home over Terriers' goalkeeper Matt Glennon and into the roof of the net from 12 yards.
The zip and belief that was arguably missing from last week's performance at Carlisle had returned and Cheltenham enjoyed a good period of play after the goal. Huddersfield struggled to get their game together because the home side harried their opponents into a number of mistakes.
McCann fizzed a shot wide, with the help of a Nathan Clarke deflection, while Wilson was ruled offside as he slid an effort into the top right-hand corner of Glennon's net mid-way theorugh the first period.
Higgs gathered Andy Booth's effort on the turn at the second attempt eight minutes from the interval as Cheltenham successfully blunted the threat from the Terriers' front runners and thwarted the supply from midfield to restrict the number of chances they created.
On the stroke of half time, Odejayi almost created a goal from nothing when he used his lightning turn of pace to close down Glennon, dealing with a pass back from Clarke. The goalkeeper made a hash of his clearance but the ball squirmed a couple of feet wide to spare his blushes.
And McCann crowned a flowing move down the right in first half injury time with a long range drive that drifted a foot high and wide.
Huddersfield replaced Matthew Young with Danny Schofield at the break, switching their midfield from a diamond to a flat four and started the second half brightly. Melligan was called into a last-ditch goal line clearance after Higgs had touched Beckett's close-range shot into the path of the Irishman, while Higgs was equal to Booth's 18-yard chance seconds later.
Gary Taylor-Fletcher played in Nathan Clarke down the inside right channel and whipped in a smart cross that Higgs was equal to as the change in shape prompted the Terriers' best spell in the game.
Ward responded by introducing Victory at the expense of Wilson ten minutes after the re-start, pushing Armstrong forward to the left of midfield, although Taylor-Fletcher found space to deliver a quality cross from the right on to the head of Booth, who powered a towering header at the back post that Higgs did well to hold.
At the other end, Odejayi drew a sharp block from Glennon on the angle while Melligan's goal-bound volley was intercepted by Tom Clarke from the resultant corner.
The Robins soaked up the pressure from Huddersfield and mid-way through the second half, registered the second goal somewhat against the run of play.
JJ MelliganArmstrong battled well in midfield to recover possession and at one point looked as if he may lose out, but the wide man showed good determination despite being pushed inside and across the pitch to tee up Melligan (pictured) on the right. He took a touch before rolling the ball across Glennon from the corner of the penalty area and in off the inside of the left upright to double the advantage.
Caines drilled a low drive after the goalscorer rolled a free-kick out to the centre half in a central position, but Glennon showed good hands to hold on to the powerful effort.
Then subsitute Pawel Abbott blazed well wide in a good position within the Robins' area after a probing ball over the top from Tom Clarke on the right.
But with five minutes remaining, the Polish striker handed his side a lifeline when Taylor-Fletcher threaded a ball through the Cheltenham back four. He appeared offside but the Assistant Referee's flag stayed down and he rounded Higgs before clooly slotting the ball into the unguarded net to set up a tense finale.
Odejayi could have settled the tie when he shook of his marker in the 89th minute and shot across Glennon from a tight angle but the ball drifted wide.
And Cheltenham had a massive let-off on the stroke of time when Hudson dragged a glorious opportunity wide from eight yards out.
But the Robins held on in the frantic closing stages for an impressive win.
