For the second match running Cheltenham Town were involved in a wonderfully entertaining game of football, which swung first one way and then the other before finishing with honours even.
The Robins slipped down to 10th place in a tightly packed third division table following this result, although they came within minutes of securing all three points.
Scunthorpe substitute Brian Quailey charged in to head home Peter Beagrie's corner in the first minute of time added on to deny Cheltenham all three points.
Quailey jumped ahead of goalkeeper Steve Book to score from close range after the Robins had fought back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 with only injury time left.
It had been another enterprising and resourceful Cheltenham performance and for long periods of the second half Scunthorpe found themselves under intense pressure and barely able to get out of their own half.
But the visitors clung on for dear life until the closing stages when they sensed the possibility of an equaliser.
The first half was a very different story with Cheltenham unable to spark any life into their passing and struggling to wrest possession.
Striker Martin Carruthers gave Scunthorpe the lead in the 14th minute when he capitalised on a mix-up between Book and Chris Banks. Book rushed out of his goal as Banks headed it back beyond him and Carruthers was left with a simple tap-in.
Veteran winger Peter Beagrie added a second goal 19 minutes later when Lee Hodges supplied him on the left of the area. His shot took a heavy deflection off Neil Howarth to leave Book no time to re-adjust his position and block it.
Cheltenham needed a quick goal to get themselves back into it and they got one three minutes later. Russell Milton and Lee Williams both had shots blocked as the Scunthorpe defence suddenly found itself under siege. The ball finally ran out to Jamie Victory on the left-hand corner of the box and he fired a right-foot shot back past goalkeeper Tommy Evans.
The goal breathed new life into the Robins and a second one followed a minute before the break when Howarth's run into the box was checked but Lee Howells blasted the loose ball into the top corner of the net from 20 yards.
Cheltenham could have put the game out of sight at the start of the second half when Evans made quality saves from Alsop and Mark Yates, and Alsop was inches away from connecting with a Tony Naylor cross and Williams had a close range shot blocked.
The third Cheltenham goal did arrive in the 61st minute when Naylor crossed from the left and Alsop touched in at the far post to complete a remarkable transformation.
Alsop and Yates had further chances before Evans scrambled back to hold a deflected shot from Naylor right on the goal-line with 12 minutes left.
Having produced such a comprehensive attacking display from the moment they went 2-0 down, Cheltenham began to tire in the closing 10 minutes and invited Scunthorpe onto them.
Book was forced to push away a drive from Andy Dawson and a short back-pass from Williams almost let in Torpey before Quailey came up with his footnote to the game.
