Cheltenham Town slipped to defeat in a rollercoaster ride of a game at Whaddon Road with Mansfield Town winger Wayne Corden striking the winning goal in the 90th minute.
Earlier, the Robins had bravely battled back from 2-0 down with two goals from substitute Julian Alsop but the good work was undone by Corden's late clincher.
Manager Steve Cotterill made one change to the line-up with Lee Howells replacing Neil Howarth and Michael Duff returning to right-back with Martin Devaney and Russell Milton on the right and left of midfield respectively.
Both sides had chances to score in the first 15 minutes with Neil Grayson heading a Jamie Victory cross over the bar and Liam Lawrence going close for the visitors, but it was Mansfield who grabbed a 29th minute lead after Carl Muggleton had dived to push a shot from Corden round the post.
Lawrence's corner found midfielder Craig Disley unmarked near the penalty spot and he beat Muggleton with a looping header to register his first Football League goal.
Mansfeld almost grabbed a second when quick-thinking Chris Greenacre tried a clever lob that just cleared the bar, but only two minutes of the second half had elapsed when the Stags did go two goals to the good.
In a carbon copy of the first goal, Lawrence delivered a corner which found Disley again unattended by markers and he despatched another header to leave the Robins facing a mountainous task.
Steve Cotterill acted immediately by sending on Alsop for Devaney and switching to three up front.
The move worked almost straight away as the Mansfield defence, which had coped well with everything thrown at them until then, suddenly buckled when faced with the big man's height and power.
Alsop scored in the 62nd and 65th minutes, first heading in a Milton cross at the far post and then grazing a centre from Naylor across the goalkeeper and in, and he almost grabbed a hat-trick with two further headers that went close.
Mansfield goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington stretched to tip a deflected shot from Naylor over the bar as Cheltenham worked up a head of steam and seemed destined to score the winner.
But it was not to be and Corden produced another neat piece of trickery to cut inside Michael Duff and blast a low shot across Muggleton and inside his far post to give the Stags their first win of the season.
