What is it with matches between Cheltenham Town and Burton Albion?
Mark Yates's men again left it late to come from behind and record their second win of the season at the Abbey Business Stadium this afternoon.
The home side were far from their best, but they showed plenty of character to eek out an unlikely win - their first at the Abbey Business Stadium over this opposition in the Football League.
Brewers striker Shaun Harrad must enjoy playing Cheltenham.
Three goals last term, he added to his tally with a 37th-minute strike here to put his side up at the break and it had seemed enough to claim the points.
Cheltenham had produced a disjointed performance and looked unlikely to get back into the contest but the introduction of Shaun Jeffers shortly after the hour changed the outcome of this one.
The Coventry loanee was full of menace and attacking intent in the wide areas and supplied two quality crosses for Wesley Thomas and Josh Low to score within two minutes of each other in the closing stages.
Cheltenham were far from assured at the back and this result would have had a different look to it had Scott Brown not produced three fine saves in the closing stages to preserve the narrow advantage.
TEAM NEWS: Boss Mark Yates made a solitary change to the side which were defeated at Rotherham last weekend. Martin Riley returned to the starting XI at the expense of David Bird, having missed that match with a hamstring injury and joined Steve Elliott in central defence. Striker Jeff Goulding won his fitness race to partner Thomas in attack so Jeffers was named amongst the substitutes.
Third minute: Low was lucky to get away with a sloppy pass in only the third minute, handing Russell Penn the opportunity to burst down the middle and release a 20-yard shot which was deflected for a corner. Fortunately from a Cheltenham perspective, the flag kick came to nothing.
6 mins: The home side's first sight of goal arrived in the sixth minute, striker Wesley Thomas cutting in from the right and rolling a tame shot wide in the sixth minute.
13 mins: Jacques Maghoma gave Brown a scare with a well-struck shot in the 13th minute although this one fizzed past the left upright.
17 mins SUBSTITUTION: Riley's match came to a premature end with only 17 minutes on the clock, seemingly as a result of the hamstring injury which kept him out of the Rotherham match seven days ago. Therefore David Bird came on at right back, with Keith Lowe moving inside to central defence.
24 mins: Danny Andrews failed to trouble Burton number one Adam Legzdins with a 25-yard free-kick after Goulding was impeded by veteren defender Darren Moore. At the other end, Aaron Webster shot across goal from a tight angle down the left.
27 mins: Cheltenham caused a few problems for the Burton defence mid-way through the first half with a pair of corners. First Pook sent one in from the left but Nathan Stanton did enough to steer the ball away from the incoming Lowe. Then Elliot should have done better with his header from the resulting corner, arriving at the back post to plant his effort high and wide.
30 mins: Smikle was guilty of wastefulness on the half hour, miscuing his strike 12 yards from goal after Moore had failed to deal with Low's centre from the right-hand side.
33 mins: The next chance of the match fell to Goulding who vollied first time from the edge of the box although the strike provided Legzdins with a comfortable save.
37 mins GOAL: Cheltenham Town 0-1 Burton Albion
Burton made the breakthrough eight minutes before the interval and although it was a decent enough strike, Cheltenham can only blame themselves for some sloppy defending in the lead up to the goal. Andy Corbett flighted a ball forward from his right back position into Harrod. The front man twisted away from first Lowe and then Elliott before releasing his effort from the corner of the box down the right, beating Brown.
39 mins: Goulding headed Pook's delivery from the right straight at Legzdins two minutes later.
43 mins BOOKING: Danny Andrews picked up the first card of the afternoon for a foul on Lewis Young down the Burton right.
45 mins SUBSTITUTION: Adam Bolder left the pitch on the stretcher after an innocuous fall after he had challenged for the ball with Wesley Thomas in the middle of the pitch. The midfielder appeared to dislocate a shoulder. Jimmy Phillips came on in his place.
HALF TIME: 0-1
47 mins: Legzdins produced a fine fingertip save to deny Keith Lowe two minutes after the restart after Pook had sent over a ball from the right. Cheltenham started the second half brightly and dominated the game in the opening exchanges of the second period.
56 mins: Legzdins was again called into action to superbly save Pook's curling free-kick from 20 yards after Moore had hauled down Thomas.
61 mins: DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION: Yates used his final two replacements shortly after the hour, replacing Goulding and Smikle with Jeffers and JJ Melligan.
77 mins: Cheltenham carved out a decent chance with 77 minutes on the clock when Jeffers got around the back of Moore and cut one back onto the head of Thomas, who headed over. In fairness the delivery was slighly behind the striker when he met it.
79 mins: Burton looked dangerous on the break and almost sealed the game with a little over 10 minutes to play. Harrad was allowed to manouvre himself into a shooting position before calling Brown into a diving stop to his left.
80 mins GOAL: Cheltenham Town 1-1 Burton Albion
Thomas got his side back on terms ten minutes from time, and it was no more than they deserved for an improved second half performance. Low played in Jeffers down the left who in turn supplied a ball to the far post where the striker arrived to bundle home from close-range.
82 mins GOAL: Cheltenham Town 2-1 Burton Albion
Jeffers was again the provider only two minutes later when Low headed home to put Cheltenham in front for the first time with eight minutes to play. The susbtitute, this time down the right, picked out the winger who applied the coolest of finishes inside the right post to raise the roof.
83 mins SUBSTITUTION: Former Bristol Rovers defender Richard Walker replaced Lewis Young for the final seven minutes of the match.
84 mins: Brown made a vital contribution in the closing stages, making two fine saves - first from Harrad and then Maghoma - to preserve his side's narrow advantage.
90 mins: Bird drew a sharp save from Legzdins with a clever free-kick 18 yards out.
90+1 mins BOOKING: Pook was carded for an indident involving Stanton in injury time.
90+2 mins BOOKING: Jeffers received a caution of his own for pulling back Moore a minute later.
90+3 mins: Brown produced his third important save at the death, denying Webster from 10 yards with the best save of the lot.
