Yates: I want a performance

Posted on: Thu 09 Sep 2010

Robins boss Mark Yates speaking ahead of the first ever Football League meeting between Cheltenham Town and Stevenage:

"Frankie is out for six weeks but that is the most it could be. We are trying to push it so he can come back earlier but it's just a case of him healing up and we wish him a speedy recovery. It's a tiny crack and it's disappointing but it gives someone else the opportunity to come into the team. You're not going to go through a season without injuries but hopefully we'll have him back as soon as we can.

"Martin Riley is okay but I don't see him playing a part on Saturday. Wes (Thomas) has missed a couple of days with a knock at the weekend but he is back in training today and it shouldn't be a problem.

"We only have a small and young squad so you always need the competition. I'm glad we have Marlon Pack here but I've got a number of options and I'll be looking at a few things today. I know roughly what I want to do but I'll make a decision overnight and pick my team on Saturday.

"We didn't perform at Barnet because there were too many people not on top of their form and they were a bit better than us on the day. We have to address a number of things but we also need to perform better as well.

"We just need to tighten up as a team and that's not just the lads at the back or the goalkeeper, that is right throughout the team. We want to play decent expansive football but we can only do that effectively if we are keeping clean sheets and limiting the opposition goals. Unfortunately we haven't managed to do that so far but I'm sure we will find the right formula.

"I think if you see the DVD from last weekend then you would see that there was a clear foul on Keith Lowe for their second goal but we still had to defend it better. Set pieces are still a concern but we're not the only ones and we'll keep working hard to put that right. We have to be more decisive and that's the message we will be working on.

"It's always important to get results but we also need the performances to come as well. For people that don't know, Stevenage are a really good team and they have some big, strong players and some real quality. They are a big squad that is used to winning and scoring goals. It will be a really tough game but we've played okay at home and I want a performance from the boys on Saturday."
