Wes voted Player of the Month

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

Cheltenham Town striker Wesley Thomas has been named the Player of the Month for August by Cheltenham Town supporters.

The former Dagenham & Redbridge forward signed for the Robins this summer and has got off to the best possible start scoring five goals in just four starts.

We have been asking Robins supporters to nominate who they thought had been the player of August and Wesley was the winner with a large majority of the votes. Josh Low and Keith Lowe also picked up votes but Thomas was delighted to pick up the honour.

"It's great that the fans appreciate what I have done so far and I hope I can keep it up for them," said Wesley.

"I'm really happy with my performances and the fans have been cheering my name a lot so I'm really happy they appreciate me!"

We have also been asking you to send in your own questions for Wesley and here are his answers to some of the best questions we received.

How has life been settling into Cheltenham following your move from Dagenham? Peter Fielding, Cheltenham

"I've fitted in here pretty quickly and settled. Sometimes you can feel a little homesick when you leave a club and because I'm not from around here it can be a little like that but I do feel at home here right now and I'm enjoying it."

What have been your first impressions on the town of Cheltenham? Adam (Vanky), Cheltenham

"I haven't actually gone out here a lot to be honest! It's a nice quiet area here and it's relaxing. London is completely different because everyone is busy and rushing around but it seems more relaxed here and I'm enjoying it."

Do you think that player's wages should be capped by the club they are with so that clubs aren't over-spending on wages? Richard Allsop, Bishop's Cleeve

"I think it depends because you don't need to spend massive amounts of money to bring decent players in but clubs have to keep up with the reality of the league.

"I think there are players that only go to certain clubs because of the wages and there is a problem but if you put caps on wages then it will affect smaller clubs. Players will want to move to bigger clubs and the smaller ones won't be able to compete.

"I don't think you need to spend massively like Manchester City have done because big players don't necessarily win you titles but then again Blackpool are being rejected by players who want higher wages and that could determine whether they stay in the Premiership."

How much thought do you give to opposition defenders, and your tactics in relation to them, before a game? Ron Wheeler, Shurdington

"We always have a plan and we always go through the opposition team, their tactics and formation before the game. It really does help mentally.

"You always look at the players you may be playing against and their weaknesses. If they're slow at the back then you'll play to that weakness."

What has been the secret to your goal scoring form so far this season? James Mashford, Bishop's Cleeve

"Probably my confidence. Ever since I have been here through pre-season I have felt confident and I just want to prove to everyone what I can do.

"After getting that first goal my confidence has been quite high."

Of the five goals you scored in August, which do you feel has been the best? Mark Smith, Cheltenham

"I don't really have a best one to be honest! Scoring five goals is good enough for me. Whether it's a tap in or a shot, a goal is a goal."
