Yates: We must maintain standards

Posted on: Thu 19 Aug 2010

Robins boss Mark Yates speaking ahead of the away trip to Rotherham United this weekend:

"The benefit of having a whole week between games is that we've been able to work hard here at the training ground. We've got a couple of good days into the players that played last weekend and it also allowed us to have a reserve game on Tuesday (Bristol City) for the boys that haven't been involved as much.

"Our aim on Saturday is to get the ball down and play good football but we're also in the business of winning games and it's not going to be pretty all the time. Rotherham have some good players and they like to get the ball down too. We'll continue to try and play but we have to realise that sometimes we have to change our style and defend properly.

"It will be a decent game and their pitch is apparently in good condition. The pitch was poor last season and they apologised to me before the game but that's something you have to deal with at our level. We have been told the pitch is better this time. The atmosphere is strange because you are so far away from the supporters but it's not a real issue and we're looking forward to Saturday.

"We put Wes (Thomas) back in last weekend and Shaun (Jeffers) understands the situation. He played 85 minutes against an experienced Bristol City defence on Tuesday and he was excellent. Shaun and Shrooty have been brought in to add extra competition for places and they'll continue to do that. It's important we get those players game time so when they are chosen for the first team they will be ready.

"You want your strikers to score and they have but you also want everybody around the pitch to be able to get goals as well. Although it has been our strikers that have been scoring them, there are plenty of goals in and around this whole squad. It's important that we continue to score goals and it's important we go to Rotherham and get something from the game.

"Martin (Riley) won't be available but that's not a problem. I have always said that our players can play in various different positions and that's vital when you have a small and young squad. Birdy slotted in perfectly at right back last weekend and Keith did well in the centre but we have options. Rotherham have Ellison on the left and he is a handful but Gallinagh did well against him last season. I expect it will be a straight fight between Birdy and Gallers.

"Theo Lewis was given the all clear on Monday, he trained on Tuesday and he will train today as well. It's great news for us, great news for the club and great news for Theo because it could have been nasty but luckily it  was a mild form of glandular fever and we'll be looking to get him back in a strip as soon as we can. We're under doctor's orders to look after him but they are happy with everything and we're glad to have him back.

"I don't think I'm going to go with a diamond this weekend. I might change my shape a little bit because they have some good wide players but I have one or two decisions to make.

"We know what to expect because they are a strong team. It will be a tough game but Gillingham, Brentford and Crewe were all tough in their own different ways.

"There isn't an easy game in this league and there aren't any easy games in any league. We have to make sure we don't carried away with a pleasing start and I'll be asking the players to maintain their standards."
