Yates: Performances must become results

Posted on: Thu 12 Aug 2010

Mark Yates speaking ahead of the first home game of the season versus Crewe Alexandra:

"I'm looking forward to going into battle on our home patch after two tough away trips and two decent performances. I'll be asking the boys for more of the same and that they start to turn those performances into results. We don't want to be a team that plays well and gets beaten. They've prepared well today and we'll be in again tomorrow to sharpen up.

"We've got to get amongst them and we have to adopt a ruthless streak. George (Rooney) and I have seen Crewe a couple of times already this season and they have some good players so it will be a decent game of football.

"I'm really delighted with the squad that I've got. They are a great group that work really hard on the training ground and we try to play the right way. We've just got to add that bit of ruthlessness to our game and if we can do that then we will win games. We'll continue to work with them and hopefully produce exciting football as well as winning football. We'll keep looking at players and my scouts are always out there but at the moment I don't see anything happening.

"We've looked at and worked on the goals we conceded on Tuesday but we defended well for the majority of the game. We have to improve all the time because there are times you will be playing bigger and stronger teams. Yes we were disappointed with the goals we conceded but we've taken a look and they will learn from it quickly.

"We're going with the diamond formation for the moment but we've also worked with 4-4-2. We'll change it around whenever we see fit but we want to play football and at the moment the diamond suits us.

"I do have a selection headache but options are what I need. Shaun (Jeffers) played the other night because Wes (Thomas) had a bit of a strain but I have an idea about where I'm going to go for Saturday. All of our strikers have their own assets and we'll score goals this season.

"Shaun has been called up to the England Under-19's so congratulations go to him for that. I have spoken with Aidy Boothroyd and the option of keeping him here longer is a possibility.

"We didn't play Wesley on Tuesday as a precaution and he will be fine for this weekend. We could have played him but if he had suffered more damage then we would have been kicking ourselves.

"We set up to win games and not to draw them. I'm pleased with the way they are playing and if we can keep that discipline then we will do well. We just need to turn performances into results and I'm confident we will do that."
