Yates: Plenty of positives

Posted on: Tue 10 Aug 2010

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates interviewed after the Carling Cup first round match at Brentford:

"I thought particularly in the second half we were very good. They had a 10 minute spell when they scored two goals, which we're obviously disappointed with, but I think in the second half we knocked it about and created chances. We just have to get that ruthless streak and we'll be working on that.

"The two goals we conceded should have been dealt with. For the first one their player headed it from inside the six yard box and for the second, we gave away the handball in a silly place and were then too deep on the free kick.

"We didn't deserve that tonight because I thought we were the better team but you don't always get what you deserve. I just felt that for 10 minutes we went a little bit soft and it cost us. They have got some decent players and if you come off it slightly, you get punished. All but for a sloppy 10 minutes we were excellent

"Wesley Thomas will be fine for Saturday. He has a calf injury and we decided this morning that he wasn't worth the risk. That's why we brought Shaun Jeffers and Robin Shroot in. Shaun played from the start and was excellent and we saw what Robin can do as well when he came on. He played just off the front man and combined really well to create a couple of chances for us.

"The goal came from a great strike by Frankie and we talked about following in from free-kicks. I thought Shaun had an excellent debut and deserved his goal. Brentford had to do a lot of defending second half and we deserved to get something more out of it. I want the players to have a winning mentality. If I'm playing my six year old boy at Top Trumps I want to win and I want the players to have the same attitude.

"The good thing is I've seen plenty of positives tonight. We had a good go and I was delighted with that. There is plenty for us to build on."
