Yates: Team spirit is good

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

Robins boss Mark Yates speaks to www.ctfc.com ahead of the clash with Port Vale this weekend:

"The performance last week was gutsy and resillient. It was a great comeback but there were things we didn't like. However, the lads showed tremendous character and it's vitally important now that they show me how much they've learnt from the past week. We need to follow up that good result with another on Saturday.

"We've obviously conceded far to many goals than we would have liked last week. Since I've come here we've always been fairly solid but it was a crazy game and the vital thing was that we came out with three points. To come back in the manner we did on that many occasions was tremendous and it's given the camp a real boost but now we have to take that confidence into the Port Vale game otherwise it means nothing.

"Port Vale are a strong side and Micky (Adams) is a good manager. They are a big, strong and powerful unit who will try to close us down and put pressure on. If we don't deal with that immediate threat then we'll have a tough afternoon but the lads have trained well this week and the spirit has been great.

"All of our back four and the keeper will have been disappointed to concede five goals but it's a collective thing and we, as a team, conceded those five goals. We need to work harder and make better decisions than we did on Saturday. Fortunately it all came right for us but if you concede five every game then that's not going to be the case every week.

"Dave Bird (ankle ligaments) has been in training this week which has been a nice boost for us because I didn't expect him to be back so early. Josh Low (hamstring) is obviously not ready but everyone else has trained and have looked really sharp in training.

"Team spirit is vitally important for us. We've had a lot of publicity this week and the only way to follow that up now is with a good result and picking up points. We don't look at other results happening around us and we never have done. Obviously in the back of your mind you know what the fixtures are and you know what's at stake but we can only concern ourselves with our own performance. If we can make sure that our performances are good and our work rate is high then we will give ourselves every chance of picking up results."
