Hammond hits four in reserves win

Posted on: Tue 19 Jan 2010

Cheltenham Town striker Elvis Hammond scored four times as the reserves defeated a young Swindon Town team 8-1 at the training ground this afternoon.

The other goals were scored by trialists Billy Gibson (2) and Jordan Parkes, with Jake Lee getting the final goal.

Cheltenham named some experienced players in their team with Barry Hayles partnering fit-again Elvis Hammond in attack with Theo Lewis playing just behind them. Former Coventry City and Blackpool midfielder Claus Jorgensen played in a three man midfield with David Bird and Watford youngster Billy Gibson.

Jordan Parkes, another young Watford player, started at left-back with Kyle Haynes on the other side and Jack Durrant alongside Ryan Keen in the centre of defence.

Swindon brought a youth team side containing members of their Under-18 squad and they fell behind after nine minutes when Lewis, who had a good game, cut the ball back for Gibson to stroke in a confident finish from the edge of the box. Lewis then supplied Hammond for a back post header that went just wide and played a neat one-two with the same player but his attempted chip lacked the power to beat the goalkeeper.

Gibson scored his second on the half-hour mark when he collected the ball 20 yards from goal and let fly with a powerful drive that flew inside the goalkeeper's right-hand post.

Hammond had looked threatening throughout the first half but he came to life with a remarkable spell of three goals in the five minutes leading up to half-time. Hayles and Lewis combined to set him up for the first and he scored the second after rounding the goalkeeper and shooting from a tight angle. The best goal arrived right on the stroke of half-time when Hammond ran onto a pass from Lewis and beat the goalkeeper with a clever chip from the edge of the box.

Jake Reid, another trialist who was formerly with Team Bath and Grays Athletic, went on up front for the second half and had two early chances, one smothered by the goalkeeper and the other fired over the crossbar, but Hammond claimed his fourth on the hour with a low finish after David Bird had sent him clear.

Swindon pulled a goal back when striker Seb Broomfield beat Joe Perry with a firm shot from 18 yards but Reid drew another good save from the Swindon goalkeeper before Parkes added the seventh goal. Hammond laid the ball back to him on the left-hand corner of the penalty area and he curled a perfectly flighted shot over the goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net.

Reid got into a number of good positions but was unable to score - his best chance a header from close range that just cleared the bar - and Jake Lee scored the final goal eight minutes from time when he swept in a left-foot shot from a cross by Gibson.

CHELTENHAM TOWN: Perry (Barnfather 75), Haynes, Parkes, Bird, Durrant, Keen, Gibson, Jorgensen, Hayles (Lee 61), Lewis (Reid 50), Hammond (Tosh 80)
