Schofield: We need to be more clinical

Posted on: Fri 18 Dec 2009

Acting manager John Schofield talks to the media ahead of Cheltenham's clash with Burton Albion this weekend:

"Whether I want the job or not is irrelevant because I'm here to do a job already. My job is to prepare the team for Saturday and that's what I will do. I'm doing the job for the moment - end of story. I'm contracted to the Football Club and at this moment in time I'm the Caretaker Manager. If the board feel I'm the man to take the club forward then i'll get the job but if they feel there's someone better out there then they'll appoint him.

"Lee (Ridley) played 45 minutes on Tuesday against Forest and had no reaction. Townsend played 70 minutes as well so that has been good for us. It was good for them to get a run out and they will be in contention for Saturday. We're fortunate to have a bit of competition for places now but it will be my decision at the weekend. We've got lots of debates in pubs now about what would be the best Cheltenham team and that's a good thing.

"There's always a risk about bringing players back into the squad after injury, especially with the calf muscle. It can react in different ways but you pick a team and if it goes well then great, if it doesn't go well then we will adapt.

"I think a few things haven't been replicated since the Barnet win and one of those is our finishing - it's not been clinical enough. I don't think we've earned the right to play in certain games as we did in the Barnet match and our decision making hasn't been as clinical as it should be. Decision making is a massive thing in football and you'll find that players at a higher level make more correct decisions than wrong ones.

"I think there's a few contenders for the right wing at the moment. Unfortunately Marley (Watkins) picked up an injury on Tuesday so he's a major doubt but, as we've shown this year, we can be quite adaptable so it's more important that, as a team, we start bright, quick and positive.

"Burton have come into the league and their full of it with some really good victories. They've adapted well and they're a decent passing team. They've come off the back of a 6-1 win so they should be flying on Saturday.

"I think it's vitally important that we pick points up sooner rather than later regardless of what time of year it is. I suppose the good thing is that if we get a victory then we're straight into the next game. The main thing is that we need to start picking up points and ease ourselves away from this end of the table."
