Schofield: Positives despite defeat

Posted on: Sat 12 Dec 2009

Cheltenham Town's caretaker manager John Schofield interviewed after the 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield:

"I thought a lot of positives came out of the game. We were playing against a side who I think will be promoted this year and by the end of the game they had changed their formation to one up front and were happy to run the ball into the corners. I thought we were excellent second half. The first half was always going to be a test with them playing towards their own supporters and they put us on the back foot. We were devastated to concede from a set play but Browny has only really had one save to make and that was right at the end from a breakaway.

"We played a lot more football in the second half and we have to get into the habit of making calm decisions throughout the game. We need to do that at a higher tempo but the players have laid a marker down in the second half today as to how we must play going forward.

"The players gave their all - to a man they did that today - and sometimes you can't ask any more than that. Make no mistake, Chesterfield are a good outfit and we battled and scrapped in the first half. It wasn't that pretty but if you keep working hard then chances will come and chances will come against lesser teams than Chesterfield as well. We looked comfortable second half and moved the ball well. We let ourselves down with crosses a couple of times but if we are getting into the right areas and can get better quality on the final ball the chances will come.

"We have to remember that we've still got a young side. They are learning and learning at the coalface, not by playing 50 or 60 reserve games but by going straight from youth football into the first team. They are learning on the way up and personally I think they've done fantastically today.

"I've been in caretaker charge for the last few weeks and really nothing's changed. I hear the shouts about me being the cheap option but nobody knows what I earn so they don't know whether I'm cheap or not! As regards qualifications for any job at the football club I'm reasonably well qualified and experienced. If I'm asked to continue doing it, great. If not and another man comes in I'm quite adept at doing any job at the football club."
