Reserves lose but performance encouraging
Cheltenham Town Reserves were beaten 3-0 in a friendly by Portsmouth Reserves this afternoon.
The match took place at the Premier League club's training ground and although the scoreline suggests a comfortable win for Portsmouth, youth team manager John Brough, who was in charge of the Robins team, believed there were some encouraging performances among the Cheltenham players.
"Portsmouth had some quite experienced players in their team and our lads did okay, against them," he said.
"We probably deserved a bit more out of the game but it was quite an encouraging performance overall.
"Both teams wanted to get the ball down and play and our boys applied themselves very well and came out with a lot of credit. On another day we would have got a goal or two with some more clinical finishing.
"The Portsmouth team included first team players Danny Webber and Hermann Hreidarsson plus some players on the fringes of their Premier League squad so it was a great test for us and we showed up well."
Cheltenham started with trialist Cedric Ngakam at the back alongside Andy Gallinagh and a young forward line of Jake Lee and David Waters - in the end Elvis Hammond was kept back for first team training - with David Hutton and Marley Watkins out wide.
Portsmouth took the lead after 10 minutes through Paris Cowan-Hall and the lead was doubled 10 minutes before half-time through Webber. Cowan-Hall added the third Portsmouth goal 15 minutes from the end.
