Cheltenham Town XI 2
Cheltenham Town's players have settled into their pre-season training base at Blandford Army Camp in Dorset and continued their run of positive pre-season results with this win.
The players trained this morning (July 23) and did a weapons shoot in the afternoon before preparing for the match. Later in the trip the players will undergo fitness work, Army command tasks and an assault course as well as continuing their footballing preparations for the new season.
Yesterday the Under-18s defeated an Army youth team 4-1 with goals from Jake Lee, David Waters and Josh Egan (2).
Cheltenham also started today's game with a young side and Julian Alsop, at 36, was just about twice the age of the next oldest player.
Former Chelsea trainee Jordan Tabor, who has recently signed non-contract forms with the club, started at left-back and goalkeeper Will Puddy made his final appearance before starting a three month loan with Bath City.
Much of the squad was made up of Scholarship players with new first years Louie Barnfather, Jamie Sauntson, Josh Egan and James Fawke getting a run in the second half.
Alsop had the game's first chance with a header that flashed wide after three minutes and the Signals goalkeeper was forced to save well from Josh Quaynor shortly afterwards.
The opening goal arrived on 29 minutes when Theo Lewis found Marley Watkins in the area with a nicely weighted pass. Watkins squared it for Alsop, who was left with a tap in at the far post.
The soldiers' left-back struck the crossbar shortly afterwards with a speculative effort but the teams went into half-time at 0-1.
Tabor was inches away from extending the lead with a long-range shot just after the re-start but the second goal arrived on the hour mark when Josh Emery picked out Jake Lee and he scored with a low shot back across the goalkeeper and just inside the far post.
CHELTENHAM TOWN (4-4-2): Puddy (Barnfather 62); Haynes (Williams 61), Keen (Sauntson 61), Durrant, Tabor; Watkins (Egan 46), Emery (Fawke 61), Tosh, Quaynor (Hamilton 61); Lewis, Alsop (Lee 61)
