Allen pleased with young players at Cleeve
Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen interviewed after the pre-season friendly at Bishop's Cleeve:
"It was a good workout, competitive without being over the top and I'm really glad we came here. Probably some of the young players will be more advanced than our senior squad because they have trained so hard over the summer and fair play to those boys.
"It's understandable that the players faded a little bit because they had a hard morning fitness testing at the University but it was a good night for the club and we've got no injuries.
"We've had some good performances from our young players and some of them very encouraging. Theo Lewis was given man of the match, Cathal Tosh and Jack Durrant did well in the second half as well. In the first half Jake Lee, Josh Emery and Ryan Keen did well and Josh Quaynor was outstanding at left-back. All those players have trained hard throughout the summer and are ahead of our other players with fitness and sharpness, which has to be expected.
"Ben Smith did okay but he needs more work and more games. We'll be chatting to him throughout the week and see how it all pans out. We've got a few more trialists coming in next week. Paul Connor is going to train with us from Monday as well and also Michael Pook, who was formerly at Swindon. I'm still considering bringing Paul Connor back because he was outstanding towards the end of last season. There was one game towards the end of the season when he got an ovation from our supporters because he had run his heart out and that's the sort of player we need here.
"We'll be stepping up the training next week with morning and afternoon sessions and we haven't done any running yet. We've also got to balance that out with going to the swimming pool and making sure we don't get any injuries.
"Josh Low was superb and took his goal really well. We'll be talking to Josh this week as well because there is a part of his contract I can't afford for the coming season so I'm hoping he'll take a cut in wages in order to allow us to use him and play him this season. I can't go into the detail of it but I'm hoping we can sort that out. He's got good technique and I like him as a person but there are some complications with the contract. I want to keep him here if I can so I'm hoping that Josh will agree to it."
