Allen: All credit goes to the players
Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen interviewed after becoming the first Cheltenham manager ever to earn a League point at Brighton & Hove Albion:
"I thought all the squad were very close, showed great unity, great belief and kept going right to the every end. Then with 10 men, which was another hammer blow, they were looking as though they were down and out but they kept going. Another important thing was that both subs came on and played their part as well.
"It was a bit topsy turvy early on. Their goal in the first minute was a big jolt for the players but they bounced back straight away and scored a good goal. All the way through the game there were ups and downs and decisions went against us but the players responded very well.
"We had guts and determination by the bucket load. The tackle that Scott Murray put in when he got injured was absolutely brilliant. It showed great commitment and that typified the spirit of the players. What also impressed me on what was a rainy, windy day was that we tried to pass the ball about. We kept it on the floor and although we could have done that better we tried to keep the ball and tried to play so I'm absolutely thrilled with everyone who has made the trip. It's a good point for our club and now onto the next one.
"Darren Kenton is not fully fit but he will be worked on Monday and Tuesday with a day off on Wednesday in preparation for next week. He is a solid, good defender who is calm and cool and can head the ball out at set plays. It was a gamble by me to put him in today because I'd probably want another two weeks with him. I was hoping he would get through to the end but when we needed a goal I took him off. I was delighted with him.
"James Wesolowski was a little bit off it for the first 20 minutes because I know how good he is but this is a much quicker game than reserve team football. After the first 20 minutes I thought he was superb. He will only get better, sharper and in the second half he really came into his own and put in a great performance.
"From where I was there was a handball in the first half in the box that should have been a penalty for us. There was a decision where Stuart Fleetwood got clear through on goal and got brought down when he was two yards ahead of their defender - I don't know why he would fall over for no reason when he was clean through on goal so that looked like a decision that went against us. Then Ashley Vincent, who was brilliant when he went on, went past about two or three defenders at full speed and just touched it ahead of their centre-back and went flying when he as in on goal. That looked to me like a penalty as well.
"Again I've got to hand credit to the players because those sorts of decisions when they go against you are bitterly disappointing, hurtful and they can knock your courage. You can get that feeling that everything's against you but they didn't, they took it on the chin and respected the referee's decision. we had knockbacks galore but showed great spirit, we got knocked down a few times but in the last minute of the 15th round, probably down on points as we were, we hit a slegehammer blow right across the chin and got a draw.
"The players are the ones who deserve all the credit because they have been kept behind late in the afternoons and when they've not been playing they have done extra physical work. The players have taken on board a lot of coaching and a lot of information so all the respect has to go to them."
