Downing: Positive signs ahead
Cheltenham Town manager Keith Downing speaks to the media after the 2-1 Coca-Cola League One defeat by Huddersfield Town at Whaddon Road:
"It was a good first half and we deserved to come in 1-0 up, but the second half is a bit of a mystery at the moment. In fairness, they came out looking sharper but we didn't perform and conceded from two set-pieces. I'll take more comfort from this defeat than the (4-0) reverse by Leicester City last week.
"I was alarmed by the ineptness in folding last week, but I think we ran out of steam today. Barry Hayles and Josh Low have come from reserve football but they have both made reasonable contributions, and I think there is a sense of positiveness after our first half performance.
"We've now got men out there fighting for us, but the bottom line is that we have to perform and get some results on the board and quickly.
"Gavin Caines came back in and played pretty well. We haven't been ripped apart from open play, and it's the first time we've conceded this number of goals since I've been here. We've done well for three or four years but we are going to have to deal with this. We have to solve it.
"It was a good goal, from a great cross for Lloyd Owusu. I thought we could have added to it before the break. We capped a solid, professional performance with that header, and I think he is a big asset for us. He's a large presence and it gives Barry Hayles the chance to play around him. With Paul Connor still to return, I think the front part of my team is coming together now. There are positive signs ahead.
"But the way we have performed in second halves is a concern, and we have conceded too many goals. We have to sort that out.
"Josh Low showed some good signs on the right wing, getting in a few crosses but we want to see more of that. I thought he had a good debut having been sidelined for 18 months. The three new boys are experienced and they have all delivered reasonable contributions. That can be overshadowed by the result but we have to try and be better.
"I thought we are a more physical side now than we were at the start of the season. There's only so much you can do on the training side because when they cross that white line they have to use that experience.
"This job is tough, but I knew that when I took over in October. As long as I am the manager I will work very hard. I've always had doubters, but I achieved last year and its early in the season now, but I am fully committed to this, and we will come again."
